Curious:Exactly what is a Tree Fern mount, how's Tree Fern prepared?

When perusing supply sites I often come across "Tree Fern" (Plaque, Board, Totem, Pot, Ball, etc). I'm not orchid knowledgeable, but cat-curious.

[General online searches mostly get photos of Cyatheales, and searching GW mostly gets "how to grow" Tree Ferns.]

So, what exactly is it in this context? A mass of roots, leaves/fronds? Are they dead, dried, baked? Completely inert and sterile, or covered with (presumable friendly) microbes, or mini-bugs and mites breaking it down?

Thanks.
