Looking for any tips on staghorn ferns
Comments (22)Those are just spores on the fertile fronds. It's how ferns reproduce, since ferns don't bloom and produce seeds like flowering plants. It's nothing to worry about. If anything, it means your fern is happy. I found this image online just to provide another example. I bought one earlier this year and mounted it. So it hasn't yet produced any spores. Although, it has been growing lots of new leaves. I hung it on the front of my house and get asked about it quite often.I had one of these many years ago and wanted to try mounting one myself. I love the way it turned out. It's getting some direct morning sun in this photo, some direct sun as it's setting in the evening, and it gets shaded by the overhang of my roof throughout the hottest part of the day. All I do to care for it is spray it with the garden hose in the evening, so that it can soak up as much water as it needs during the night and dry out in the morning sun. Such interesting plants....See MoreNeed Staghorn Fern remounting instructions
Comments (6)I have a very large staghorn that has pulled out of its chain mount and fallen from the tree it had previously hung. The weight, about 75 pounds or so, makes it difficult to work. The old mount looks like something went into the sides of the plant . This is what pulled out and the plant fell to the ground. Any suggestions as to how to securely hang the staghorn?...See MoreHow do I re-attach a large staghorn fern? Help!
Comments (2)I attached a mature shield to the front of a large half basket using a large piece of plastic mesh from a grapefruit or onion bag and a bit of panty hose. I used twist'ems and string to secure the net cradle to the basket. It looked pretty awful but a new shield frond grew over the mesh and I was able to remove the ties and string as soon as the roots grew through to the moss beneath. It is hot and humid here and I would hate to actually pierce anything I didn't have to....See Moremoving staghorn fern
Comments (1)Hi Colleen, how large is large? Staghorns are pretty tough in my experience, I have a largish staghorn, about 6 or 7 years old, that I move all over the place but it's not mounted, it's growing in an old wrought iron thing that I think was a swag lamp in it's former life, lol. If it were me I'd just unscrew it from the wall and screw it where I wanted it to grow, provided that I had such a place....See Morebunnyhouse
