Need Staghorn Fern remounting instructions

When it becomes necessary, through growth, to remount a staghorn fern, how does one properly remove the plant from the existing mount and reattch it to the new mount?

Jim,

If your staghorn is mounted on a board, then the typical approach to this is to attach the old board to a new bigger one. I've had to do this a couple of times to my holtummii and it works great.

There are a number of other options if your staghorn is mounted another way. Let us know and we can maybe provide more info.

That is what I've been told about the staghorns too... to just add more wood.

We get a lot of geckos inside. Cute little things, except for their poop, but they seem to mainly hang out on windows so its pretty easy to clean. I let them stay in hoping they keep the bugs down, ants, roaches, and poisonous centapedes are part of life here, it took me months of agonizing before I accepted that you cant clean your way to a bug free home. Its the downside of living in a tropical paradise. There are many anoles on the lanai, they are pretty friendly, I saw one the other day chasing a roach that was almost as big as it was, I wanted to see what it planned to do with it once it caught the roach, but they went under the fence. The anoles are bug eating machines, but they jump on me, which makes me jump every time, and after I saw one eat a baby gecko, I still carry a grudge. How long have you had your staghorn? I am wondering how fast they will grow, what do you feed it with? I have been occasionally giving it some bone meal and boiled banana peal/coffee ground water, as advised from someone local. Here is an anole visitor to my desert rose. The geckos are shyer, its hard to get them to sit still for a picture.

if you have a patio deck or something of that sort, maybe you should use a chain that will hold it and hang it. i've seen a couple that are hanging by a chain at nurseries and they seem to be doing good.

I know that this is late, but I made a way to lower mine into a wheelbarrow (actually it's more ON the wheelbarrow as it won't fit into it) for hurricanes. I almost lost my big staghorn to Charlie...It got nearly beaten to death and all new growth stopped for almost 2 years. I use the same chain method (no pipe through, just criss crossed stainless 2" links) but at the top, I have a tow strap that I threw over a MUCH higher branch and tied off on a lower one. It takes my husband to pull and me to get under the thing and push to take it higher into the tree, or him holding and me getting smushed under it to lower it. On the other hand, it hasn't gotten beaten up by any more high winds!

Hi I grow mine on trees so conditions are much different but have NEVER been able to grow them in a pot lol Mounted they are super easy . . Yours looks good don't think you have a problem . As it grows it will adjust ?? About all they really seem to need is good drainage gary

I need to move my large staghorn fern that is attached to a frangipani tree. The fern has been on this tree about 4 years and has wrapped itself around a large branch.

Is it safe to unwrap it from the branch or will I need to take the branch with it? If removing is OK, are there any special instructions for removal or for remounting in this case?

You shouldn't need to cut the branch. Just grab ahold and gently yank it of the branch. Then mount it like any other cutting/transplant.

I have a very large staghorn that has pulled out of its chain mount and fallen from the tree it had previously hung. The weight, about 75 pounds or so, makes it difficult to work. The old mount looks like something went into the sides of the plant . This is what pulled out and the plant fell to the ground. Any suggestions as to how to securely hang the staghorn?

I have a 6' round staghorn weighing in at about 150# -- It's 35 years old and I want to divide it into several plants, some on boards and some in moss baskets. what steps should I follow to transplant in sections?
