Barcelona/Francis Dubreuil in zones 5-6?
Comments (14)Ispahan - thanks for the encouragement to post about my experiences with hardiness and winter protection in zone 5. I guess I'm a good test location for toughness in zone 5, given all of our ups and downs all year. I'll start a new thread, actually several threads, in the Roses forum since you'd asked about HTs and other moderns. Once I checked back through my records, I found quite a few HTs and Floris that are reliably cane hardy in my zone 5 yard, and it'll be interesting to see if that carries through for others of you in zone 5 or folks like Michael in zone 6 mountains. I'll wait till fall to post something about my strategies for winter protection in cold zones, since it's largely too late to worry about it now and it'd get lost by the time folks wanted to remember it. I did take Melissa's advice too and posted a comment for Barcelona with the information I mentioned here. I'd be happy to send that in an email to the HMF folks as well, including my other personal hardiness observations, but I couldn't find an email on the site even with a premium membership. I do have the intent to contribute to that site since I rely on it all the time, but time gets away (I started posting my garden last fall and only got through the A and B on my list). Comments (14)These are quite different looking plants, I think. Frankie is much more lax and his flower shape much more modern and less petaled than William's, although he's still very beautiful. In my garden, William has been much more disease resistant than Frankie, there's really no comparison whatsoever. William never needed much spray. I'd pick him over Frankie since the shape of his large flowers is just absolutely amazing (see pics in current thread on Othello v. Wenlock) and his performance outstanding without requiring much effort of any kind on my part. I also grow him here in the UK. So I'd say William Shakespeare 2000 is a must, whether you also get Frankie or not. Also, before I forget, my tip to put Frankie in a pot on a sunny deck must be taken with some caution because his dark flowers can burn when it gets too hot, so some afternoon shade is a good thing for him. William doesn't need this precaution. Andrea...See MoreFrancis Dubreuil in a container?
Comments (17)Hoov, Thanks so much for the info on your deadheading technique with FD. That pretty much explains our difference in size by fall. I might try an experiment next year, and deadhead FD much less hard and see how it does. But b/c about two-thirds of my roses are in 15 gallon pots, I'm always looking to keep the medium to big fellas more in line, with blooms more at eye level. :-D Jim, The whole FD vs. Barcelona debate has been going on for years. I used to pay a lot of attention to these things, but not so much now. Last time I really paid attention (a coupla years ago), the conclusion was that the FDs and Barcelonas currently available are the same rose, and that the real FD is probably lost. These debates are fairly common regarding various roses. It's always interesting to hear the debates and the final consensus! Susan...See MoreFrancis Dubreuil/Barcelona rose?
Comments (4)I grow my in a big pot and put it somewhere has morning sun and late after sun. It is a good bloomer for me but could has BS sometimes. I think the color and fragrance is to die for and it stays "small", compared to other tea that I have....See Morefig_insanity Z7b E TN
