What's This Stinky Tar Stuff Oozing From Birch Log?

Peter

Hope you can see this photo above!

...and hope this isn't the wrong dicussion either.

So I got this--what I'm sure is--birch log here, which I scavenged from a wood pile last year and cut the ends flat and leveled and have been using it as a plant stand indoors.

However, this nasty STINKY tar-like stuff keeps oozing out of it very slowly and I'm getting pretty disgusted with it. My only guess is some kind of disease or infection, mold, or fecal matter excreted from grubs, but I had hoped whatever started this was going to cease by now since afterall this is a long-dead and dried up log.

I've also considered it might be sap for this kind of tree... but for example; maple syrup and spruce sap is a billion times better smelling than this!

As far as I can tell it has not spread to anything else around the home, it seems isolated to the log, otherwise I would have just thrown this thing in the fire and be rid of it.

Any advice, beyond burning?
