Three-Way Instead of Two-Way

I have a garage where the overhead lights do not have a switch inside the garage. Instead, the lights are controlled by a switch that is just inside the door to the house -- a pain in the rear. House built 2004.
I thought I would just wire a three-way box inside the garage, connected to the switch inside the house -- which of course would be also converted to a three-way. The existing switch is just on the other side of the garage wall, so I figured it would be very easy. Like most projects, it got un-easier as soon as I started!
Opened the switch box, and found the switch is already wired like a three-way! However, there is NO other corresponding switch in the garage.
With the switch OFF:
White is HOT, Black is HOT, Red is OFF.
With the switch ON:
White is OFF,
Black is HOT,
Red is HOT.
There are two switches in this particular box; the other switch is wired like a three-way, and it controls a light in the kitchen, and works fine.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why the wiring would be this way, and how to go about wiring the three-way?
