questions on Nikko Blue and Anabelle Arborescens
Comments (1)Nikko's bllom on the previous years growth. If the above ground browth dies over the winter, you won't get blooms. My guess is the plant did better this winter than the past two. My Annabelle's tend to bloom a few weeks earlier than my Nikko's. The blooms stay white for a couple of weeks then turn green for a couple of months and turn brown in the fall or winter. It will bloom once per year. You can deadhead if you want. It won't effect blooming. Annabelle is a much better bloomer than Nikko Blue since it blooms on new growth....See MoreNikko blue droops every day - water every day?
Comments (1)Yes, do not water so often as this can end up causing root rot. Just be aware that large leaf plants like hydrangeas will wilt during the first summer (or two) as the plants are not established. Established plants will still wilt during the summer but not as bad as in the first summer or two. They recover by nighttime on their own. What to do: If you see extreme wilting then water immediately. Otherwise, check the soil moisture by inserting a finger into the soil to a depth of 3-4". If the soil is almost dry or dry, water. If the soil is moist or wet then postpone any action until next morning. If still wilted in the morning, add 1/2g of water for a small shrub. Having a lot of mulch helps conserve moisture so make sure that the plant always has 3-4" of any type of acidic mulch. When watering, water early in the morning & water the soil -not the leaves- from the root ball outwards towards the drip line....See MoreNikko Blue Hydrangea blooming pink?
Comments (1)It takes times for a newly planted hydrangea to stabilize into the normal color -- usually 2 to 3 years. Beyond that, stop the fertilizer, acid or not. The phosphorus interferes with the absorption of aluminum from the soil, a necessary thing to have blue "flowers" on the hydrangea. Instead, our local hydrangea guru -- he used to grow them commercially -- says compost is the best fert for hydrangeas....See MoreIs there a certain way to cut flowers on established Nikko Blue?
Comments (1)I´d say cut all the way down to a couple of leaves with good buds between them. YOu can actually prune now. If you wait for autumn or next spring you will lose the flowers next year. After cutting the flowers hold them for a couple of hours completely immersed (stem and all) in cool water. The bathing tub is a good place ;-)...See More- 8 years ago
