Is there a certain way to cut flowers on established Nikko Blue?

I have a potted Nikko Blue. It is in a large pot, but over the years the plant has developed into quite a large "bush". I know that right now is not the right time to shape/prune this plant so that it's size is more suitable for the pot it's in.

But in the meantime my question is this....If I want to cut a flower or two to put in a vase, is there a certain way I should cut it....should I cut the stem just over a leaf? Should I cut all the way down to where the flower's stem meets another stem? Since as mentioned I aim to prune the entire plant when it's time (in the Fall I believe?), I'm trying to think ahead...that how I cut the individual flowers now could have an affect on my later pruning the entire bush...

Thanks!
