The zones on some of these plants are too conservative. I live in zone 3 and grow mums, sedum, asters basically all except many roses and red hot poker.

Sweet autumn clematis is good, and many herbs such as sage are still going strong. Purple leaf sage is good in a container. Also lamb's ears hold up well, and many creeping sedums are pretty going over the edge of a fall container.

Montauk daisies grow as big as shrubs and bloom in September-October here in NY. They survived a sub-zero winter and you just need to spray them with something to repel woodchucks, who like to nibble off all the buds.
