From the photos and what you've described I don't think the overhang should be a big issue. It would be extending out three inches into the family room, about the size of the palm of your hand (w/o fingers even). You would probably want a foot or two of clearance for chairs/stools or 2.5-3 feet for walking between the bar and any furniture anyway, you could probably eat into that for laying out furniture without too much difficulty. As far as the look of it goes, it is a very slight difference well away from your doorway so it should be difficult for someone to notice. You might want to go over with some cardboard and position a fake bar along the edge so you can see how it would look. If you decide to go with the overhang and then don't like the intrusion you could probably obscure the protrusion further by putting tall potted plants (or something else tall) near the door edges to make their position fuzzier and have them look even with the bar.

we are just finishing a 2-level peninsula similar to your plan. will post pictures soon. we were well aware that this is "off trend" but figured that by the time the kitchen is finished, it will be almost back "on trend" again! you just have to go with what you need to function best. hiding all the s*#% (stuff) from the dining area was big for us. we also really enjoy sitting at a counter. my husband makes pasta a lot and likes the idea of having 2 levels-- one to work on, and one to dry the pasta on. we put outlets all along the 6in. support, as you had mentioned above. we also put one outlet facing toward the bar side (also in the support) which i think will be handy. i also had an idea (after the fact) to build in a little soap/sponge holder into the 6inch support right by the sink. it would have been nice. ah, well. next kitchen. as mentioned and shown above, we also used hidden brackets for support. they are routed into the side so the face piece went over them and then the under-counter part of the bracket does not show at all. we didn't have room for the corner bar section that you show in the last picture. i like the look-- it does seem to update the bar look-- but don't know how it would work for your situation. have fun! kawh

I'd put the three-seat sofa up against the wall (facing the TV) and the two-seat sofa where the three seater is now. In other words, just reverse the sofas and move everything to the left, so that the large sofa is against the wall. If you want to use your laptops there, I'd move the glass table and use it for the TV and components, and use the ottoman as a "coffee table" on which to put your feet when using your laptops. Get a second, somewhat larger, ottoman to put in front of the larger sofa, so that each sofa has an ottoman on which to rest feet and which is reachable from all seats of the sofa. Breakfast nook, I'd reverse the cabinets you've got, put the small cab and mirror where the tall cab is, and the tall where the small and mirror are now.

So, it's 15 ft from window to fireplace? Is that the entry to the left of the fireplace in the last pic? That first pic Rawketgrl posted shows the seating area on an angle. That might work well in your room so that the piano and fireplace can be the focal points. An upholstered chair and table can to go on the end by the window. I like Acm's idea to bring in a game table, which can be just to display a few things if you want. The couch can be perpendicular to the fireplace, with the bookshelves behind it and couple of chairs facing the fireplace. Or, turned 90 so that the couch faces the fireplace. Chairs on one side, or both, depending on the room available. A table can be by the windows for display of some pretty things or used for games. Plants, tables w/ lamps to fill in the holes. A large rug will anchor your floating seating area. My combo family/living room is similar in size to yours. My seating area floats in the middle facing the fireplace, which is on the long wall. The back of my couch faces the entry because the shorter direction didn't give me enough room for my couch and tables. Around the perimeter is a huge lighted cabinet, a table with lamp, and two dressers that hold music/media with the tv on top.
