Need advice re: kind of bulbs/wattage for recessed lights!
Comments (6)I am a little obsessive about lighting and have alot of recessed lights in my house. I have three types of bulbs installed currently (well 4 if you include the CFLs in the kitchen). All are Par30 short neck in 6" recessed cans. I have Philips 'Halogena' in my bath (and former kitchen) as these are the brightest and whitest. I have a mix of 65 Watt Philips and Sylvania floods. The Sylvania are not quite as bright and a slight bit warmer than the Philips. I have arranged them so areas that need brighter light have the Philips bulbs. I also have some on dimmers as well for additional control. I never found I lacked light, so more than 65watts was unnecessary, and lower wattage is better solved with dimmers for my house....See MoreNeed advice regarding Halo LED recessed lights!
Comments (1)The Cree CR series is cheaper (utilizing the attached trim piece) and probably better dimming performance, power consumption. If you want to use a custom trim piece, the cost comes out to about the same as the Halo....See MoreBathroom Lighting Advice needed - how many recessed lights in 5x9?
Comments (9)Don't do a recessed light above the sink, you will get shadows. Don't do ONLY a recessed light above the sink. I also used pretty glass tile in the showers and it looks really nice when illuminated with 2 lights and dimmed just a bit. Ambiance lighting for when guests use the full bath downstairs! That sounds so nice! Two additional thoughts, not related to the above note: As you plan your lighting, consider your color scheme. If you're going with today's trendy lots-of-white, maybe-some-gray color scheme, light's going to bounce off those stark whites and could feel harsh. On the other hand, if you're using a softer, darker color scheme, those darker colors will "absorb" some of the light; so you'd need to ask whether you'd need more light fixtures. I like to read in the tub, so I definitely plan to have a light of some sort "behind me" for that purpose....See MoreHelp! Need advice on 3" LED recessed lighting
Comments (6)@Patricia Colwell Consulting, thank you, contractor has said the same-just wait and get used to it. I'm very light sensitive, always have been, so LED has been tough for me-but I don't want a yellow glow, so good to know on that! Maybe I'll try 2700 in living and 3000k in kitchen, out kitchen is very white, so I don't want it to feel too sterile. Right now we just have old canned bulbs in there and the light is fine, actually quite bright (some of them might be LED bulbs now that I think about it). Thanks!...See Morebostonoak
