Poor Clay Soil Drainage. HELP!!

I'm preparing to put in a Japanese garden...or so I thought. We in CA have been experiencing severe drought. To save water, I removed the lawn with a sod cutter. Well, now that its been raining heavily, I now have pools of water in my yard. I think I may have cut too much healthy topsoil (if there even was any) away when I removed the grass and am left with a compacted clay soil. I cannot install a French drain as it would be way too much work and I've no pathway for the water to grade and drain away. We also cant just cut the concrete curb and add our own drain to the street without permits, which I doubt the city would grant anyway.
I dug a 1.5' deep trench in one area but its not enough. Are my only other choices to dig and amend the soil? Other options? I even thought of buying a sump pump but where would i drain that water? Oh phewy. Either way its not going to be fun but all shared experiences and advice are welcomed. Thanks

you have to improve your rate of infiltration. A good clay soil, if it is deep, should infiltrate 8 inches of rain, no prob. Either grow deep rooted cover crops, or dig deep and place organic matter through the soil. you can also use a combination of the two.

thanks for your comments. I think i'll do a combo of both your suggestions. As it doesn't rain much here in CA I'm not prepared for such rainfall.

I think I'll plant some nice ground cover there, which will absorb water and add nice color to the whole effect of the garden.

I'll need something thats drought tolerant too. But this plant looks promising. Its called blue-green sedge. Do you know if its ok for CA?

Thanks to both mel and joey. I neglected to mention that the plan is to till in about 5 yards of compost/sphagnum peat in the whole area. I don't think I could grow much of anything in this soil without amending. There is a semicurcular lawn surrounded by river rock -- or rather it was -- and I have already planted some columnar buckthorn against the back fence. There are also some other bushes and an ash tree, etc. Just not much in the way of flowers.

I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM and solved it. It's called anearobic... or something like that. It's very bad smelling, like sewer. Yep, know it all too well. Here's what I did and now the smell is GONE! I'm not sure exactly which of my remedies worked because I did them all around the same time. Oh, I should tell you first what DID NOT work. Amending the soil made it WORSE. Adding lime and peat made it WORSE. I dug 8 hole, about 18 inches deep and threw in a bunch of rocks I bought in bags at Walmart. Then I added 1 bag of playsand (about a dollar or so at Walmart). Then I capped them off with their old soil 'hat'. Then I sprinkled another few bags of the playsand all over the yard, especially in the wet, mushy, smelly areas. Then I threw some Perfect Seed grass seed (also at WalMart) on top and my yard quit stinking. So... in effect, I made some french drains, removed some of the clay soil and replaced it with sand and then top treated the whole thing with sand. The grass took off and now I can be in my yard without any problem. Do a search on the forums for this anaerobic soil condition (some kind of bacteria build-up I think) and you will probably recognize your situation right away. If you add gravel, you will end up with very packed clay and gravel. If you add sand, you will end up with clay and sand cement. Build up the area by tilling in loads of organic matter and you will create a good soil that will drain of excess water, unless your topography is such that all of the water in the vicinity is running to that low point. Clay soil can still drain well. If you have a few low pockets, then you will need to fix that before the problem can be solved. Even a slight change in elevation can create a pooling effect....like the previous follow up explains.

The ph and complete composition of mushroom compost is going to depend on what the mushroom growers use to make their compost and what they add to it. This will likely vary depending on what type of mushrooms are being grown. The mushroom farm where I get my compost uses gypsum for added calcium so I don't expect that the pH of mine is exceptionally high. The soil the OP has sounds like it is at least on the slightly acidic side (strawberrys mentioned.) And another component of the raised bed mix is peat so I doubt the problems in the raised bed are due to High pH. The manure/Mushroom compost mix may have a fair amount of nitrogen but if it was sterilized before being sold, then it may not have the necessary microbes in it to make the nitrogen available to the plants. Softmentor, your lengthy post about how plants and seeds can't grow in the non mineral soil media, I can't agree with. I have grown plants hydroponically and Therefore know that soil is not necessary. That said, most of my gardening is outside on the ground, the larger deeper rooted plants I'm sure reach the native soil, but a huge number of my plants are actually growing in deep layers of mulch and compost. I've found seedlings sprouting in 4' deep piles of wood chips before so saying that "Seeds can't grow in the "O" horizon, they need to be in the "A" horizon" just doesn't jive with what I have observed in my gardening nor in nature. Some seeds/plants may need the mineral soil more than others but most any plant you can grow in a container with a potting mix can grow without mineral soil provided it gets fertilized with what it needs.

A lot of people put in a cistern, or above-ground tanks. The water from rainy times of year can be stored and used for irrigation during dry periods. You'll be able to water your landscape while other's can't. It isn't very expensive, and the tanks, (if you can't afford to bury them) are easily hidden behind lattice.

The simplest method? First, put the tank it a spot where at least some of gutter runoff can be channeled directly into the tank (with screens to filter out debris.) Second, use your sump idea to pump the water into the tank(s). You could probably do the entire job yourself for less than $1000 and it will be a low maintenance investment. You could even channel grey water to the tank if you wished, and... if you started to collect too much, you could use the water for flushing toilets and other grey water tasks. There is lots of information available, and this is more common than many people realize.

wow, very nice water recovery system. I'm doing some conservation and recycling and are actually rated one of the top water savers on our street. right now my concern is about the water pooling in my garden. i was hoping to have it done soon, but its got two areas with about 1-2.5'' deeepp water pocket

Probably would have been best to till in that lawn instead of chucking it, but you probably already figured that out. If water is pooling, you might want to work on the grade a bit to help it drain. Amending the soil is the best way to increase infiltration. If it won't make the grade too high, bring in loads of compost - up to several inches - and till it in. If it will be fairly permanent beds - not annuals - the more the merrier as this is your best chance. Till first, then add the compost and till that in.

If fluffing the soil is going to be a problem with grades or draining from the house, you can scrape off more clay before you start.
