Hellebores from Trader Joes when to plant?

Hi, picked up a few Lenten Rose hellebores today at TJs from the flower section. My intent is to plant them in the ground for future years. Question: should I enjoy them in their pots now, and then wait to plant in the ground aftre the foilage dies back, or, go ahead and get them in the ground now? In SW CT, zone 6 (colder part). I know there is probably a Hellebore forum where I should post, but I am more concerned about our region timing and if anyone has ever bought hellebores from TJs before? I either got a major bargain, or if not plantable outside, a few weeks of beauty. :-)

I would imagine that it depends on what it is like where you are now, and where you will be planting them. Like most plants grown inside, they will probably need to be acclimatized to the light levels outside by being put outside for an increasing amount of time each day, starting with just a short time in shade to prevent leaf burn. However, hellebores are fully hardy and are normally blooming around now in zone 6, so I wouldn't worry about planting them out as soon as they are hardened off and the ground isn't frozen. The ground here is still frozen in many spots, but that may not be an issue for you.

The foliage should not be dying back. This is not that type of plant. In fact it is semi-evergreen. The foliage often looks ratty at the end of winter and that can be cut back next spring if needed.

Hi (again) Kristi!, I know nothing about the specific varieties you speak of, but in general a first year pepper does just fine with 1 sq ft of growing area (even less in a container). Some of the larger hot peppers will do better with a bit more space, but sweet/bell plants do just fine with 12" spacing. Also, there is a pepper forum on GW where the real pepper geeks can provide input as well. I think it's the 'hot pepper forum', but as I recall the folks there are just pepper geeks and will be happy to talk about not so hot (heat wise) peppers too.

Gigi, phal roots like air movement around their roots. I have made a simple change in my TJ orchids by just gently pulling out some of the moss they are in, to have it more loosely packed (if you're careful, you can do this with some tweezers and barely disturb the roots). Once relieved of the bulk of the soggy moss, they're fine. I've got a few for over a year like this. I use a spray bottle to evenly and thoroughly wet all of the roots, then give a week or so to completely dry out. They're finally outgrowining the pots, but they have all rebloomed for me. Should you choose to put them in a ceramic pot with holes (I would use a bark mix in that type of pot), they will also be pretty happy, but you may need to water/soak more often. The good thing about these pots is that it will be fairly impossible to overwater it, as it will drain and dry out pretty quick. I soak them once a week, then hit the top with a spray bottle pretty heavily now and then. Again, very happy to be there.

I knew the Albrecht group owned them but just thought they started Joe's. Aldi and Joe's both have an interesting background. Personally I've never understood nor seen the attraction of Trader Joe's. I seldom go there. Aldi? I go there more and more often. Apparently I'm more of a Twinkies person than tofu.

My Yuzu tree also has fruit, but I have not counted how many. I also have a bottle of Yuzu juice that I have not yet opened. Yesterday I went to TJ's and bought two pineapple plants. I'm not sure how much sun to give them - the pineapple plantations I've seen were growing in full sun in the tropics, but when I put my other pineapple plant in full sun, the leaves seemed to get a bit burned, and so I put it in partial shade. The tag with the plant said "bright light" but also indicated that it could be grown indoors if you are not in zones 9-11. I put one of the new plants in full sun (see below) and the other one in partial shade, next to the other pineapple bromeliad. I will move the one in full sun if it starts to get burned. Lars

The soil is probably too soggy right now. I'd wait until it gets less muddy.
Personally, in these situations I usually enjoy Spring ephemerals inside until they stop blooming, then plant them outside and hope for best.
