peepers
Comments (43)I heard them last night for the first time. They were off in the distance, but I heard them. I think a few warm days and they will really turn up the volume and appear in the woods around my home. Digger., I love that you have salamanders in your house and that you go down to check for them. That's a riot. And they DO move slowly, rivalling sloths, I think. I found 2 really little ones (about 2 1/2") last year, one in the wet grass near the pond and one under a creeping juniper in a different garden. I haven't seen one of the big daddies for a couple of years now....See MoreSpring! Peepers!
Comments (29)Finally!!!! I saw on last year's thread that I reported hearing the peepers sing April 1 or 2. This relentlessly cold spring it was April 26 here in Danby, Vermont, three and 1/2 weeks later than last year! And I *have* been faithfully listening for them nearly every night now. I really thought they had all perished or decided to stay under the mud all summer, but fortunately they live!...See Morepeepers!!!
Comments (31)veilchen: March 31 it is. You reported April 8 in 2005 and April 15 in 2004. One week earlier each year. At that rate (if it continues, of course) the peepers will be competing with the groundhogs on Groundhog Day in 2014! I wonder what will happen if the peepers see their shadow before the groundhog does ... Claire...See MoreWhat did I hear?
Comments (3)Could have been racoons (fighting). I once heard them fighting near my tree stand while sitting in the dark waiting for the sun to come up. If you have a pond they were probably hunting crayfish....See Moreclaireplymouth z6b coastal MA
