What did I hear?

We live east of Cleveland, Ohio on about five acres of land in a neighborhood and have a pretty large pond right off the back deck.

Tonight I made the mistake of sleeping with the window open. The spring peepers are peeping but at 4:15 am I was awakened by the sounds of baby animals crying.

The cries sounded like the squeaking of glass or mirror when you are cleaning it. To my hears it sounded like several babies together that were crying. The sound did not move. Then I heard what I am guessing was the momma defending the babies. Horrible screeching and then hissing and then the sound of crackling tree bark or maybe a large branch breaking and then a big thud. Then silence. No more babies crying. What do you think I heard?

It is still dark out so I can't go take a look.

Could have been anything ... bobcats, coyotes, owls, feral cats, foxes

Could have been racoons (fighting). I once heard them fighting near my tree stand while sitting in the dark waiting for the sun to come up.
If you have a pond they were probably hunting crayfish.

It's funny, I didn't remember hearing the peepers during the day. My husband tried to see some in the wet areas by the driveway. No luck. I have the bedroom window open so I can listen to them as I fall asleep.

I'm beginning to think I heard a different type of tree frog or something like that. It has a vibrating,long even pitch that lasts for about 10 seconds or more. I hear it along with the regular peepers in my woods. I think the clue is vibrating sound. That makes me think it's a frog of some sort.I feel like I live in Africa at night.

Racoons- sound like what I heard last spring- babies crying and Mom defending them. I could hear them scrambling up the big sweetgum tree for protection and then all was quiet.
