Did I hear this right?

They were talking about, if I got the story right, Howard Stern is having a beauty contest for Tiger Wood's ex(?) mistresses. The newsreader said that 4 of them have already applied to take part in the contest.

Tell me I misunderstood!!!!

Rosepedal, Don't you just love living in a "temperate" climate? Seasonal swings better than 100 degrees- Temperate. Right. LOL. My GH is so well insulated and so much air moves with the big ceiling fans, I can usually keep it below 80 even on the hottest days and the 60% aluminet shade cloth certainly helps, but last August, when the temps hit near 100, I was getting a bit nervous and thought about the old fashoned whitewash I can't use on my polycarb, when I remembered what I'd seen once in so. Italy: white cloths being used for shade over kitchen gardens. So I went scrounging at the local thrift shop and came home with a half dozen king sized, white flat sheets that I sewed together to make a single piece large enough to cover my 12 x 16; roof and down the sides a bit, particularly on the end facing SW. I installed grommets on the edges and used thin bungees to hold it down, but left it pretty loose, so the the roof vents could open under it. It helped a lot and the temp. dropped several degrees. Then, eager to cool it down more, I sprayed it with cold water it and that really made a difference, although the sheeting dried pretty quickly. I left that lightweight sheeting up for several weeks, wetting it several times a day in the hottest part of the afternoon until the worst of blistering heat spell passed and am glad to report that none of my fish in any of the tanks in the GH were par-boiled. Anyway, it was a pretty cheap solution. I think I spent less than $10.00 on all those sheets. Sort of a pity on several of them though- 800 count cotton percale deserves better than to be tossed over a GH, but it worked.

You're welcome! Oh, yes, I know La Crescenta weather! I had a very large (twelve-hundred-plus plants) rose garden in Newhall for eighteen years. Happily, I'm down to under two hundred here in Encino, now, not counting seedlings. I'd think once you have the plants sufficiently hardened off, putting them outside when the weather cools off, in a protected area while they continue maturing would be much better for them than anything indoors. Do you have issues with squirrels, rabbits or other rodents where you are? Hopefully not, as they can devour a new, tender young plant like those in a sitting. I budded some plants earlier this spring and they were developing nicely...until a rat or squirrel gnawed the shoots back to the shanks. They went far enough to even get the guard buds, so they failed. As long as you're not concerned with the plants blowing away or being washed away by heavy erosion, there isn't any winter storm weather you should really have to be concerned with there. It doesn't get cold enough to damage roses as a general rule. They're honestly not as fragile as we like to think they are! As long as the potting soil drains and doesn't remain goopy, soggy, it shouldn't be an issue for cuttings. I've planted all of mine in the plain old Miracle Gro Moisture Control Potting Soil because it remains damp enough for smaller pots to not dry out in a day when we have the heat and wind spike so common in our areas. It works just fine, much better than the non moisture control has because it does hold more water than the "regular stuff" without being soggy. The only bagged soil I've encountered in recent history which was real garbage has been Super Soil. It USED to be decent, but now is a mucky, goopy mess, so I'd avoid that like the plague. My dissatisfaction with the other brands I've more recently used has been they have dried out too quickly, often requiring being watered daily when it is hot, dry and/or windy. The Moisture Control hasn't. That can make a huge difference during a heat or wind spike. I even use the Moisture Control soil to raise my rose seedlings in with good success. I only cut it with either seed starter mix or perlite for the seed cover to prevent it from being too heavy to allow small seedlings from breaking through. If your bags are remaining sufficiently moist to only require watering every two weeks, you probably don't need to mist the cuttings. It sounds as if they are remaining moist enough. Too much misting in the bags can easily turn to rot very quickly. I'd only mist them if you're seeing them being flagging or wilting from heat. Otherwise, it seems you have your bases covered. The Canary government has just ordered meetings with the supermarket chains here in order to stop food which has reached sell by date from going into the garbage bins. Normally the law prohibits using these products but it has now been eased in view of the severe economic crisis many local families are suffering. It's now not uncommon to see people going through the supermarket bins at the back of the stores to retrieve this food which is still edible. The food must now be distributed to the needy through help centres. It's about time that we stopped tossing food that is still good enough to eat when so many people are needy, so I'm glad to hear that something is finally being done about supermarket waste. SharonCb

I have been here for a LONG time,lol I just rarely post! Yes, only certain solutions/wipes are effective against the noro virus. You can google to find the results. I can't recall the wipes we bought! I found a few on Amazon Why do some people get sick and other don't? Better immune systems--some take better care of themselves--and wash their hands properly. I'm a RN and watch people wash their hands--many just get their hands wet, little soap, lather for like 3 seconds and done! You need to really lather up and work it,lol And keep ur hands away from ur face!! When walking up and down the stairs, if possible don't touch the rails----and for sure then don't touch ur face!! Even doing it al properly won't totally eliminate the risks, but will sure help out!

I think it's disgusting too...however...nobody is saying you have to watch it. We are free to pick and choose what we listen to and what we watch.

Why blame Howard Stern? The fame ho-hos didn't care that Tiger was married and they can choose to be on the show or not.

Yes, Howard Stern, revolting as he is, has his fans. And yes, he will make money from this (and all his other sleaze). But that doesn't make it right to capitalize on this.

I'm not a Stern fan, but I think it's hilarious! And what's so disgusting about it? They're not being "used", "abused" or otherwise. They're entering it of their own free will. I know a lot of people think beauty contests are sexist and degrading but I don't. I think this is far superior to making a "reality" TV show out of it, the plethora of books and of course they'll all be on Oprah Windbag's show to hype them. There's far worse than a beauty contest IMO.

I've never met a fan of his. I wonder if they are the same ones that were fans of Jerry Springer. Thank goodness he is gone but his bouncer dude now has the same sleazy show Jerry had....and Maury isn't much better with the trash he has on.

Comparing Howard Stern to Jerry Springer is like comparing apples and oranges. Jerry Springer has trash on his show. Howard Stern talks trash to poke fun at our culture and the world we live in.

I wonder how many people who hate Howard Stern so much have actually ever listened to what he really has to say. My bet is that most just hear the coarse language and tune him out or even worse have just heard how awful he is.

I don't do "fan" or "idol worship" but I am one who enjoys his wit. I'm not easily offended by language and I love his wit. The guy is smart. He is a savvy businessman as well as an excellent shock jock.

I listened to Howard Stern for years when I lived in Philly and most of my friends don't consider me revolting, even the ones that don't care for Howard. It was a mixed bag and there were some days that I chose to turn him off but for the most part the show was funny and interesting and better than any of the morning drivel that is on in the mornings now.

I agree with Paula; listened to Howard for years and made the choice on occasion to turn it off when it got over the top. It was only a matter of time before some of Tiger's ex flames would try to make some money off it. I won't watch it, that's for sure.

As for Oprah, she has her own sly way of exploiting people. Obviously, not as crass as Stern, but same outcome, in my opinion.

I think the idea is hilarious and creative marketing for the show. So far four have signed up so each girl has a 25% chance at that $100,000 prize. The odds will change if more sign up of course, but since most of these TW girls are in the entertainment business already it can only boost their career - win or lose. Howard will boost his ratings. Everyone watching will have a big laugh. Good times all the way around.
