Anyone been to Avery Island?

It's where they make Tabasco. Thinking about heading over that direction from Houston for a couple of days. I'm trying to plan a trip. Is there anything else anyone would recommend? We could also do day trips to Baton Rouge, St. Francisville, Lafayette or anywhere in between if there is something good to see.

The family loves the Ghost Adventures shows on tv. Also thought it might be fun to go see someplace haunted if there is something in the area.

I've been there but it was fifty years ago.....my husband was shrimping out of Delcambre, La. I love Lafayette. Have been tthere many times for the Louisiana iris society convention. Mostly tour gardens and visit nurseries and enjoy the food and Poupart's french bakery.

Yes but like Marilyn it's been years now. I go to Lafayette occasionally when I get back home. I recommend breakfast in Breaux Bridge there's a restaurant that has a Cajun band that plays, it's a fabulous good time.

Café des Amis hosts a Saturday morning brunch from 8:30 to 11am with Jean Pierre and the Zydeco Angelle's. Café des Amis is located downtown in Breaux Bridge. Another zydeco brunch got started at Pat's Café Creole from 7-11am.

On this trip I want to sit in the sun, shade and water. I want to swim, snorkle, get on a boat, drink a little, nap, read and finish the day with a decent diner. All that without thinking. I want nice, but not "fancy-pants". I like beach front, not over water. I don't want to be tied to a cell phone or the Internet. Late October travel takes a number of options off the table. I was in Tahiti at Club Med twice- 1997 in Moorea and 2004 in Bora Bora - and loved it. Both times I didn't have to do anything unless I heard silverware clinking in the dining room... left my makeup and nice clothes at home. It was wonderful. I look at some of the resorts that are on those islands now and think its just too much. Hawaii is often a family visit for me. I can get there in 5 1/2 hours and go for a short time. I'm too easily reachable by phone and/or email and get contacted from work. Yuck! I always have a good time, but don't see it much as a get-away vacation destination. (I fly on air miles earned from work travel so I'm not spending a lot of money for these trips) I don't mean for my Hawaii statements to sound snotty, it's beautiful there....just a different kind of trip for me.

Anyone ever been to Malta?

YES, Lessa, I was there about 6 years ago - it was one of the most interesting places I have traveled. It has a very varied history from the ruins of ancient Goddess worshiping cultures to Greek and Roman History as well as the origin of the Kights of Malta. It is also a favorite beach destination for the English, although the beaches are narrow and rocky. Because it has a history of British occupation, everyone speaks English as well as Maltese and we found that the people were very friendly to Americans. The food was fantastic - much like the food in Sicily - lots of fish, home made cheeses, wonderful vegetables. There is a small casino, which was kind of sleepy as casinos go, and minimal night life. The whole place is very easy to see in a week and transportation around the island is easy by bus. Be sure to take a day trip to Gozo, another small island off the coast. Well worth the trip!

What I remember about Avery Island is the sharp Tabasco smell in the air a mile or so before you actually reached the buildings. Burned my nose a little. Near there we had to stop the car to let a good sized alligator cross the road. I was surprised that he walked with his body off the ground. I had always thought that they slithered. I liked St Framncisville, liked the houses there.

Last time I was in Lafayette they had a freeze, very unusual for that area. Dampened my plans to take in the town.

Natchez is lovely if you plan to go that far.
