Anyone Been to Grenada, the Island?

A friend and I are making plans to spend a week in Grenada in January We will stay on St. George island, but don't know much (yet) about what to do, where to stay, where to eat. Has anyone been there? Any suggestions? We are budget to mid-price travellers but would dearly like a hotel on the beach.

I believe my sister's closest friend and business partner is from there. She still has business connections there and travels there from time to time. I will ask her for info about St. George and if more info is needed, we can do the email thing if you want.

Faron - since your DW and DD don't want to stay at 4S, take a look at The Hudson Hotel. I think it may definitely peak the interest of your DW & DD. It is a very happening, chic place. A place where you are apt to run into a celebrity or two during your stay. The Hudson has been used for more than a few movies as well as an episode of the S&ATC HBO series and Gossip Girl. While they do not advertise, the hotel is always full. Only in the middle of the hot summer when everyone on the island of Manhattan has escaped to the Hamptons will you find an available room at the last minute. I think it may be just the place to celebrate a 21st birthday in style. Anyhoo, I am attaching a link. Check it out with your DW. It is a bit pricey, but I try to get there at least once a year. I have nothing to do with The Hudson, make no money by endorsing them, just an obsession to go back as often as I can do so. In fact, after looking at their website, I do think my own DD's 21st might be celebrated there. I think the entire vibe of The Hudson is perfect for celebrating a 21st birthday. The Hudson is situated directly across the street from the Time Warner Center, which houses the Shops at Columbus Circle, and a short walk from Central Park. You could walk down W. 58th and not even know that it is a hotel unless you've had the good fortune of a stay. However, behind the long neon light and arborvitae standing in urns, lies a gem! Has anyone been to Palm Island ? (The Grenadines)

I've been to a Palm Island during a Caribbean cruise from Puerto Rico to St Thomas. Is this the same island? If so, there wasn't much there but beautiful beaches, great snorkling, one hotel that we saw and a steel drum band that played non-stop. :-) Would I go again? Absolutely! The only negative thing we encounted was horrible black flies of some sort that bit us over and over as we walked the path to the hotel. We didn't actually spend the night in the hotel as it was just a day trip via small boat from the cruise ship. Jodi-

If you want something a little different, do a search for Cumberland Island. It's off the GA coast and it takes a 45 minute boat ride to get there. The boat stops at two locations. One will take you to the beach (after about a 1/2 mile or more walk) and the other to see the ruins of a mansion once owned by (I think) the DuPont family. That may be the wrong name. The island is mostly uninhabited and you need to take lunch and plenty of water with you because there's no food/drink for sale unless you're staying at the one little B&B type place. I prefer the beach myself. Miles and miles of beautiful sand and hardly any people. There are wild horses that roam the island. Frankly, they scared me to death, but they don't bother you and you are warned NOT to bother them. They are really wild. It's just a a beautiful place to spend a day. I've been there 3 or 4 times and am blown away every time by the beauty of nature. Not sure how the weather would be the first part of April, though.

It's near Japan. Some ugly stuff took place there during world war 2 and the some of that story is in a book called Fly Boys that came out maybe a couple of years ago. The US Navy built about 14 military houses there and for several years, Navymen and their families lived in those houses. I think the island was returned to Japan in the 1960's or 70's. My history is a bit blurry on it. It was in the news not too long ago when they found a giant squid off the coast. When I found others that had been there on the internet, they sent me pics of my family on the island that we had never seen. They have organized get togethers for those who lived there over the years, and I hope to attend one in the next few years. Just wondering if anyone here has been there. Linda

We were in Grenada years ago, and if it hasn't changed much you will love it! The people are ultra-friendly, also. Try Tripadvisor for information. Reviews are written by travelers, not PR people, and you can post a request for information.

I've been there briefly in 1981 - one of the islands on our Caribbean cruise.

Grenada, I believe, is called The Spice Island.

As we got off the cruise ship, we were amazed at all the spices you could purchase.

Grenada is one of my very favorite Caribbean islands, enjoy! Trip Advisor is a great place to start but sadly many of the reviews are being written by folks who are not what they pretend to be.

UPDATE - my sister has contacted her friend about you, so I hope to have info very soon. This is what she does, especially since she is from Granada. I'll check back in as soon as I get the info. You may even be able to contact her directly as well.
