Coffee grinds....as potting soil?
Comments (15)I am in 7th grade attending High Desert School in Acton, CA. I am doing an experiment for a class grade and one of my variables is coffee grounds. I planted the seeds on the 2nd of April, and so far, the coffee plant has not sprouted, while the other two have. I would not recommend using it as soil, because it definitely doesn't help the plant grow....See MoreCoffee Grinds & Worms
Comments (22)When I first started, a local coffee roaster gave me a bucket of worms from his huge (approx. 12'x40') wormbed. He said he feeds chaff to his herd, along with lots of scraps from his bakery. He gives out free burlap sacks, but not chaff. I would only try a handful in the corner with a small bin and see how it goes.. Worms absolutely love burlap. In the past I have used it as a bin topper. For a single tote bin, just fold up the sack and lay it on your bin. It helps keep things dark and damp on top, allows great air movement, and reduces flying critters. If you wet burlap first, and then lay it over the bin, worms will move right on up into the layers and start having a party. It takes a few months but eventually it breaks down and gets consumed....See MoreGREAT Price on Sweet Maria's top corn popper/coffee bean roaster
Comments (13)A year ago i found my old popper after running across a video and discussions on a coffeegeek forum. I've been using a chemex drip method for a few years and was researching a new grinder around that same time. I thought the home roasting was a bit nuts but keep the thought on a back burner... Now it is just an easy task i do when i'm in the kitchen anyway. Usually a weekend morning where we are anyway together, planning our day. I still have a favorite Costco bean, the yellow bag. I've even forgotten the name it's been so long. Took a few bags on our trip last summer. (but ran out and had to buy overpriced cans, gack!). Might have to pack a popper and green beans this summer. Watch a few videos and decide if it might be worth it to you....See MoreGrinding coffee beans
Comments (19)Correction: I use HALF a cup of beans to grind coffee for 3 cups of coffee, not a whole cup of beans. I would prefer a glass container for the ground coffee, but don't find the plastic on in the Cuisinart a big problem so far. The plastic container for the whole beans is of no consequence to me. It's grinding evenly, and a setting just south of "Medium" grinds fine enough for me. The roar is a waker-upper. Think of an old cartoon where a character has upset a hive -- only *louder*. The most important feature of any drip coffee maker is its' ability to heat the water to the right temperature and keep it there to the finish. You also need good water. Our tap water is great, but I still draw from the filtered water dispenser in our refridgerator door. I only want coffee brewed NOW, not an hour later, and not 'kept hot' on a hot plate. My old Krups drips into a pre-heated thermos carafe that I can then seal tight. I don't find that feature on any 'grind and brew' makers. (Some have thermos carafes, but they don't seal.) We would probably be good candidates for the single cup capsules, but I'm too cheap to pay more for the maker or the capsules!...See Moredbobul
