potting soil mess
Comments (3)Jane NY, yes. I used normal clay pots with drain holes and clay plates underneath. But the dirt still came out the bottom and overflowed the top and collected on the patio. That gave the weeds something to grow in. Maybe I have to use more care when watering. I just thought there was something simple to do. The very large pots I used for elephant ears did not flood or come out the bottom. Carol...See MoreSoil heating "spikes" for potted plants
Comments (4)I have a product called Flex-watt (it is used in radiant heat in floors, and has been bastardised for use in heating reptile enclosures) I overwintered a Russelia that wound up dying back to 2 stems and the roots. In desperation I wrapped the pot in in a 12" piece of the flex watt, and it recovered and is coming back nicely. The Flex-Watt itself is relatively inexpensive, but make sure you use a thermostat as the flex-watt can reach as high as 110 degrees F/ 43.3 C...See MoreCoffee Arabica - Re-potting advice
Comments (2)Hi Coffegirl1, My guess is that you should take your cue from the type of soil it was in before you transplanted it. I tend to use a soil-based mix with perlite for draining.(2/3 soil 1/3 perlite) Try a couple of other horticultural sites/books than the one you used (like a second opinion) also when I've been totally unsure of myself I've called over to my local botanical garden (I live in Brooklyn so it's the BBG) and had them look up my plant in their books. I also have called the sellers if my plant wasn't doing well. (Logees and a seller from the Albany,NY area--It turned out that his business was his home and it became a long and wonderful phone call!) Hope this helped! Lori...See MoreUsed coffee grinds as....
Comments (9)To funny!! Well I have been keeping mine also, along with the coffee filter. I figured there are 2 things I could do with them. 1 either mix it with my mix that I am using in my containers. Or 2 use them in one of my beds to help break up some of my clay. My thought was, that earth worms actually feed off of coffee grounds. Well earth worms actually break up dirt. Well I plan to plant some woodland plants in this one bed. So I was going to dump my coffee grounds in that bed and mix with the existing soil. Maybe someone else can give us some tips. I have been wanting to ask around to people using coffee grounds but I just haven't gotten to it. Oh by the way when I started my comment off to funny, I wasn't laughing at you. I was relieved to find that someone else must think like I do. Ha Ha!! As far as which plants need more acid the only way I know that is research every plant, sorry....See MoreKimmsr
