Help Identify this hanging flower from Walmart

I have a hanging flower from last year that I thought I killed in a hard freeze, but it is coming back, but poorly. It had reddish/pinkish flowers last year, was much thicker, trailed more. I think maybe it was grafted and all the grafted part died, leaving me with the hardy vine root stock? Can you identify it by the leaves? I'd like to know if there's anything I can do to make it less viney this year, or if I should just plant it as a vine in the yard? When I prune it it bleeds sticky milk like stuff that smells kinda icky. This is not the pot it came in, I was hoping giving it more room would help it be less stressed.

Sort of like this? I don't really remember it too clearly. It was very pretty, might have been a bit more "open" than this?

Orange alstroemeria would work also, although budded forms are not nearly as attractive as the open flowers :-) Also orange mini carnations would be attractive as well, but again will produce a slightly different form from the picture bouquet. Tulips would be almost a perfect match for shape and form and with the South American cut flower market, they are available in many areas pretty much year round.

@flora_uk ~ Getting closer, but not quite I don't think. These little guy's heads literally hang upside down almost from the get go. Most of the pics I find of Viburnum opulus show larger flower heads, and upward facing--unless very large and their weight alone makes them hang. The pic taken at dawn was with me standing under the tree. I held a branch up a bit to show a different angle, and in this one, you can see how the little petals of each individual flower are kinda ruffled. Maybe all the little details will help.

If you have your original photos to post, that could help...many things that could help id are missing from your art photos, but are probably in the original...for instance if anything else is in the photo, something like scale could help. As far as one can really tell, #7 could just as easily be a ohoto of a silk flower taken at the store (okay, maybe an exaggeration).

Flowering house plants generally need way more light than foliage house plants will get by on.

Mr. B., I think that you're correct about Mandevilla. There are several different kinds that are sold as flowering baskets. The foliage matches, the white latex, the pink tubular flowers, etc.

Phae, if our suggestion seems to match with what you have, you cannot plant it outside. It's a tropical plant.....a vine, as a matter of fact.

You can cut it way back in the spring and it will back bud and grow some more branches, but it will always be a woody vine. That's just what they do.

MrBlubs, I googled that and that looks EXACTLY RIGHT! I know nothing about them, Is there anything I can do to help it recover from the epic night of freezing it survived? It looked completely dead for over 6 months, just bare dead branches. I stopped watering it except for once every other week, just a cup of water, thinking not to cause it to rot if it were dead. I was really pleased when it came back over winter while being a houseplant! I did a severe pruning and hoped for the best. Does it need any special fertilizers or can I do anything to help it?

Ah, ok. It did great outside all summer as a hanging plant, I just derped and forgot it on the first hard freeze (actually I was out of town). It's not a very pretty hanging plant now because it's so spindly, I guess I will put it in a flowerbox and give it a trellis this year? Seem reasonable? Then bring it in and baby it in a hanging pot again next winter?

Rhizo, can you tell me how best to cut it back, and when I should get on with that here in Vermont in this odd mild year? It's spring already, I barely have any ice left in my yard!

No, it's NOT spring, lol. You have to go by the calender, not what today's temperature is.

I think that you should wait until the days are much longer. That will trigger a growth response in all of our indoor plants. Out of curiosity, you could cut a couple of those stems back by half.....just to see what happens now.

Global warming spring, no? ;P

I'll give it a test trim on two shoots. It's safely inside right now, so even if it does trigger a growth spurt, that's fine, no risk of it being killed by the cold. I googled a bit and it says they like shallow pots to flower, so I may put it back in the cramped pot it came out of. My mistake. If I can get it back into the bushy hanging pot shape it came in for this year, that would be nice, if not I can live with a vine too! Should I trim the old dead spikey trunk on top all the way back to the part the growing shoots are coming from? I left like 2 inches when I cut it back after it "died", but nothing is growing above a certain height.

If you can for-sure not forget it outside overnight, taking it outside on warm (55 or above) sunny days could help a lot. Go easy on the direct sun at first since the leaves aren't used to it now, maybe 30-60 mins per day, when warm enough. Google image search to see what Mandevilla vines can do, though doing it in VT will be a step-up in difficulty, a heat loving plant. While inside, put in your sunniest possible spot.

You might also be drawn to Fuchsias, which have similarly dramatic flowers and are slightly easier to keep over winter inside.

I wouldn't trim anything off now except the newest leaf forming at each tip (which will force each branch to make new growth tips somewhere.) It needs the few leaves it has.

You should be glad to know that most people don't have a plant that looks as good as yours by now. You'll have a head-start on many barely-alive plants when spring has sprung.
