What do you cook in your convection microwave?
Comments (7)one pan of cookies, banana bread (one breadpan), a cake pan with some fish in it for two people, couple of potatoes, oven fried potatoes for 2 or 3 people, a few rolls, one 8" cakepan with a favorite chocolate cake recipe, any time I want to cook something small and it seems silly to use the big oven. Haven't tried doing bread only because I normally do 2 loaves at a time. I wasn't sure how much I'd like it but somebody suggested that it makes a great second oven and she was right. Wish I could find a 11" or 12" diameter non-stick cookie sheet to use in it because the metal tray on which I can put food directly has a groove about 1" in from the edge....See Morewhat type of dishes do you like to use in microwave
Comments (20)BE CAREFUL!! You should never heat water in Pyrex in the microwave without a disturber in the water. A bamboo skewer is a good choice. If you don't have something with an irregular surface that the bubbles can form on, the water can look like it's not boiling at all, and can get superheated. The superheated water can explode out of the cup. Pyrex is too smooth. Fine for pie or even soup, but put something tall enough to go from the bottom to the top of the cup in it, if you're going to heat water, or put a spoon in it before doing anything else with it, to let the bubbles out. Pyrex used to be borosilicate glass. You can still get Pyrex branded borosilicate in other countries, with the name licensed by the makers. In the U.S. (PA), it's now made by a separate company from Corning, and is tempered soda-lime glass, which is supposed to be harder to break but less heat resistant. It's not inferior in quality, just different in properties, and Corning was also selling tempered soda-lime glass, besides the borosilicate, for decades before they spun off Pyrex, so age doesn't tell the whole story....See MoreIf you have a microwave drawer, how wide is your aisle?
Comments (4)I wound up with about 40" from counter edge to edge, about 38" from front of micro drawer handle to opposite drawer handles and 23"when the micro drawer is open, The front does stick out a bit in front of the cabinets drawers and the counter top. I have a range top that also sticks out, and in my case, that sticks out further, so the micro is almost recessed by comparison. My knob to handle clearance at the range top is right at 36". Comments (10)We lived without a microwave for many years. I've also lived without an oven, altogether. The steam oven is an oven. You might be able to live without any other oven, depending on what you need your oven to do. It doesn't microwave and won't replace a microwave. You can reheat a plate of different foods in a steam oven, or several portions of one food, and get beautiful results. Far better than a microwave. You can steam a sandwich, but unless you have a blast of steam setting, it may not give you results as good as a really good microwave will. You can certainly do any of the blanching and steaming tasks you might otherwise choose to do in the microwave, and better. But it's not a microwave. Re quick warmups of leftovers, while the steam oven will do it better than a microwave, it certainly won't do it faster. It'll take up to 20 minutes to get hot, and another 10 minutes to heat a full plate of food. More if there's more or denser food. Instant oatmeal can be made with boiling water and a fork to stir with, or on the stovetop in a pan. You could probably figure out how to make it in a bowl in the steam oven, but it would be a big bother, require preheating, and waiting for the water to boil, etc. Popcorn is easy to make on the cooktop in a covered skillet. Even better if you have a whirlypop. I wouldn't put it in the steam oven at all. Period. Except, as I do sometimes, ground up into flour and put in the bread... You can use a combi-steam oven instead of a toaster oven for just about anything that doesn't require toasting. You'll still need a toaster for that....See MoreUser
