Comments (61)This is a very old post but I want to correct the misinformation in the last post. Spring flowering bulbs will, and need to, start rooting as soon as you plant them. It makes no sense to say that they don't grow roots until February. Some will already be flowering by then. You plant them in the Autumn because there is still residual warmth in the ground which gets them started. If that were not the case you'd be planting them in the Spring. They cannot 'winter over the first year' if they don't have roots. They'd just rot. If you dig up a well established daffodil in September you'll see that it is already growing roots. 4 of Bud's plants were spring bloomers, one was a summer bloomer and one wasn't a bulb at all. It's also not true that 'everyone needs to dig up and divide at least every 3 years.' You can divide them if they need it. But it is not a hard and fast rule....See MoreAnyone order from Breck's Bulbs before?
Comments (32)I rarely write comment online. But, please DO NOT order from this company. I placed an order about a month ago. 5 items came. I received an email that 2 items are in backordered, still haven't received them. They keep changing the date. Now, I am chasing back for an item that I placed, but the customer service said I had never placed the item, instead they told me I placed something else which is out of stock. I told them I never placed that item, and I have the original order which was sent to my email. No supervisor available. Everytime I called, I am talked on the phone for an hour and a simple problem is not sloved. All I need is to have money ($15.98) back to my creditcard for the items out of stock. Not asking for more. Very very frustrated!!!...See MoreBrecks Catalogue -- 'Lily Trees'
Comments (28)I'm needing advice! I live in Boulder, CO at an apt complex of seniors, where I am one of 10 residents who take care of the gardens. One of the volunteer gardeners wants to plant three "tree lilies" (her wording) on a south facing slope this fall, before she quits the garden group and also leaves behind several large flower beds that she's planted over several years, all with high water need plants. I'm thinking this south facing slope is a so-so location, especially with our hot and dry summers. We do have asiatic and oriental lilies that are doing fine, but require a lot of watering. We have been in an overall drought situation for about 18 years. I'm concerned about the water use and would appreciate your comments. (I'm also concerned about the extra work the rest of us are left to manage! as most of us have some sort of disability or health issue.)...See MoreWhat's in everybody's Breck's boxes? Comments (8)Thanks very much folks! I know I'll be up against Japanese beetles and BS down here in New Orleans, but the 5-for-$30 sale is the perfect way to try a few at random and see if I can make it work. It's super late for bare roots here (already low-mid 80s) so I'm going to throw them in pots and keep them in the shade/otherwise babied until they get nice and settled - if I lose a couple I'm that much wiser and only out $6!...See Morearlene_82 (zone 6 OH)
