Comments (61)This is a very old post but I want to correct the misinformation in the last post. Spring flowering bulbs will, and need to, start rooting as soon as you plant them. It makes no sense to say that they don't grow roots until February. Some will already be flowering by then. You plant them in the Autumn because there is still residual warmth in the ground which gets them started. If that were not the case you'd be planting them in the Spring. They cannot 'winter over the first year' if they don't have roots. They'd just rot. If you dig up a well established daffodil in September you'll see that it is already growing roots. 4 of Bud's plants were spring bloomers, one was a summer bloomer and one wasn't a bulb at all. It's also not true that 'everyone needs to dig up and divide at least every 3 years.' You can divide them if they need it. But it is not a hard and fast rule....See MoreNewbie saying 'Hi and thanks'
Comments (12)I agree with the previous replies. Try the D. adelaes for now and a Venus Flytrap later when you have the capacity to add florescent lights for indoor growing in a south window, or outside growing ideally. Mine grows well indoors with 12000 lumens of florescent light and a south window. The D. adelaes do appreciate lots of light, but do burn in direct sunlight. A south window and 6000 lumens of florescent light is about the most I would give them as mine develops very vivid purplish hues and an extraordinary amount of dew in such light. Much more and they would probably burn. The good thing about D. adelae is that once you get their conditions right they will clone themselves into instant gifts for family and friends. They are almost impossible to kill as long as they get mineral free water, some good light, and plenty of space in a fertilizer free mix of sphagnum peat and perlite....See MoreWhat's Everybody Working On Right Now?
Comments (10)Welll, If you are sure you want to know...I dragged home a bunch of picket fencing over the past couple sun nights. Finally got it up in long corner of back yard slowly working on keeping deer out dogs in. Made some bird houses out of old wooden cannisters painted added them to posts put in ground in front of fencing.Every couple of days I run out and spray paint (liked the color spruce green + faster way to get them done)It has been pouring here. I am trying to finish the painting so I can plant. Trying to figure out which headboards I will use for my bench. Have lots and DH needs space to get to table saw. Finished,on rainy day, trimming towels with fabric to match the curtains and shade I made for the bathroom I just painted and redecorated. I also made a slipcover for the huge square ottomon I found outside an apartment(new but cat scratched on one side) I put it at the foot of my bed hoping at least one of dogs will sleep on it since they dont like the dog pillow! I also have a couch that I need to stain and recover 6 cushions for my sunporch- that hasnt been finished in 15yrs. But according to DH this is the summer! Bought house with badly done leaky room added in the 60's and its the last room to get attention. Part of garage is filled with stuff waiting to go in there. If DH finished it it would clear out the garage. Maybe I shouldnt go there....Once it gets finished I get to paint the whole thing! I also have an old window that I want to make a coffee table with for porch. I want to attach plywood to the back and do broken china patterns in the 6 squares. I have a primitive hooked rug almost finished for my family room,a friend bought me the class. A rolling cart filled with yarn and books as a bday gift from another friend cause she is into crocheting afghans and baby blankets for her future grandchildren.Ha,none of her 4 kids are in serious relationships yet. But she figures it is better than eating in front of the TV. How about you got anything going????Dianne in upstate NY(in case you were wondering if the weather was an excuse)...See MoreBrecks' Rose Sale 5 Roses for $24.99
Comments (162)I received my 3 DAs from Wayside Gardens (last day sale) yesterday, planted them today after soaked them over night. Just received 2 bare root rose trees from JP today (ordered on their last day sale after 11:00pm :-), I was just testing them out, didn't think the order could go through). I have been watering all my newly planted bare root roses everyday. Helen, What's the temp in CA? You might need shade and a lot of water for those bare root DAs. What are the names of your DAs? I got Gentle Hermione, Olivia and Heathcliff....See Morelavenderlacezone8
