Direct sowing alyssum with bark?

I'd like to plant quite a bit of alyssum this spring and I just don't have the space or materials to sow in containers and transplant. I've read alyssum is easy to direct sow but I'm not sure how to go about that with the layer of bark I have. The bark is the dark brown wood chip type. Do I need to scrape the bark away where I will be sowing? Or just sow on top and not worry?
