Comments (3)From USDA food safety : Caution: Do not attempt to can pureed vegetables, red meats, or poultry because proper processing times for pureed foods have not been determined for home use. Instead, can and store these foods using standard processing procedures. Puree or blend them at serving time. Heat the blended foods to boiling, simmer for 10 minutes, cool, and serve. Store unused portions in the refrigerator and use within two days for best quality. It slows down the heat penetration of foods when they are pureed. Water around chunks of food heats more quickly. That is one reason that pureed pumpkin and pumpkin butter is not safe to can. With soups, to safely can, you fill the jars half full of the solids, then the other half of the jar is the broth. If you are canning kale and other greens, you need to be careful to have the jars packed loosely with them, otherwise they pack too tightly and the heat cannot penetrate them properly....See MoreBoil vs wash
Comments (2)Thank you so much for all your help! Even though it is a "no rinse" I plan on using it just like any other soap/detergent. Speaking of fermenting, I tried my first batch and tested it with litmus paper to confirm fermentation took place. I was really happy with it. While this batch continues to ferment, I started a new batch taking all your recommendations and the things I have learned the hard way, into account. In the second batch, I included ingredients to my hot sauce like carrots, onions, Ect. In the ferment. But for the first batch, is there any safe way to add ingredients ,with out fermenting them,to make my final sauce? I can't seem to find any tested recipes that use fermented pepper mash as a base. I do plan on paterizing and bottling my final hot sauce. Thanks again, Scott...See MoreCascade Fryer Boil Out...WOW, WOW, WOW :)
Comments (24)Chlorinated Detergents are not so great for rubber dishwasher seals, admittingly. However.. they are not horrific. They we're used for decades in automatic dishwashers without problems, and I'd equally say that most machines made within the last 10 years are designed to handle corrosive, high PH detergent formulations. I have however noticed that there is a significant problem with GE & Hotpoint made machines though, concerning the Main Wash Dishwasher Detergent Cup leaking or allowing water to spray in, before the main wash cycle. Because of this, most if not all of the detergent is wasted, long before the actual wash cycle.. causing spotting & lackluster performance. I correlate this problem with the the fact that most detergents are now made with Higher PH's due to lack of cleaning agents, and substitutes for Chlorine, which may be too much for the very poorly designed rubber seal seated around the interior of the cup. Despite this... GE's engineers say it's not a concern, and they believe dishes will come out "adequately clean" for consumers....See MoreBoil Washing Linen - left my pillowslips yellow
Comments (32)Homepro...boil washing in a Miele is one thing but in a pot thats metal.. aluminum or whatever even if its glazed enamel can cause oxidation. That being said boil temps like that is no good for linen modern or vintage. It breaks the fibers down. Sure it may appear fine but the life span in the end will be shortened. I highly doubt a RL sheet is going to fall apart after a boil wash, today, but what about 3 years from now. Remember what Roc tells us, good linen or cotton textiles are an investment, she's right. But end results with boiling linen or bleaching it is most certainly going to drastically shorten the investments lifespan....See Moresuburbanmd
