BlueStar or American? Concerned about BlueStar door heat?
Comments (8)If you do a search you'll find people on here who say the BS door is so hot if you touch it you'll burn yourself, and others who say the opposite. Barry makes a good point about the other things in a kitchen that can cause a burn. I've posted this before, but I'll do it again. I've had a BS RCS for over 2 months now. The sides of the door where the vents are get very hot. Touching those for a few seconds could potentially cause a burn, if you held your hand or other body part against it for at least a few seconds, and probably it would take longer than that. Not a likely scenario. A brief touch will not burn someone. And not much of the sides are exposed though, so unlikely to be an issue. But the door itself, nope. My door doesn't get that hot. Mine gets warm. The glass part gets warmer than the door but I've held my hand against it for several seconds before it's uncomfortable. I had a Viking range before this one and the door, the oven sides and the struts that attached the oven handle to the door got really really hot, painfully so if you touched them more than briefly. I raised two kids with that range, and no burns whatsoever. Kids learn quickly not to touch things. I wouldn't worry about the BS door at all. Get the range you like....See MoreAnyone else concerned about roses next summer?
Comments (21)I am new to it the same as everyone else here. I have been learning from some helpful rose growers in Florida and Texas who say that some years you get more damage and some years will be light. Keeping populations from building up is essential. Heavy pruning in the heat is asking for a Thrips battle. I saw that at nearby Fullerton Arboretum. The plant cannot keep up even if you cut every thrip damaged stem and flower off. The new growth is thin and weak. The canes grow stretched thin in an effort to outgrow the thrips rasping away at the tender tissue. At the end of the year, only thin canes remain and these will have few flowers. A few years like that and the rose fades away to nothing The antique roses at Fullerton were left alone after spring bloom and had little damage on the mature growth. So even though heavy damage was going on nearby, the roses that weren't making an abundance of soft growth seemed to get a break. There was some damage here and there which I would have sprayed. I did tell them about chilli thrips this time last year but how they responded to them seems to be by trying to prune off damaged canes and buds. I don't know for sure, that was just my guess by looking....See MoreHow concerned should I be about skipping home inspections?
Comments (40)From what I am reading, you were lucky enough to secure a contract on an unusually large home in a hot market. In circumstances like that, being in the right place at the right time gave you the opportunity to buy a desirable home. If you choose to back out, you will spend more money trying to secure alternative housing, fees and charges duplicated on the next house you find and likely pay a higher price for the replacement. If you back out now, you are guaranteed to lose money, but if you close, you have a fairly good chance that you haven't bought a problem house. Most issues found in a home inspection are not deal breakers, especially if the property was built in the past few decades. Old houses are more likely to have expensive problems but if this is a newer home, serious issues aren't as likely. In my area, most sales are as-is with an inspection clause which allows the buyer walk away if there are substantial defects found. In common practice, buyers request certain items to be fixed and sellers often fix issues to avoid losing the sale. However in a hot market, sellers are likely to refuse to fix issues unless lenders refuse to finance the purchase....See MoreFicus Audrey: concerned about new white spot clusters
Comments (0)Just yesterday I noticed these very new clusters of white spots on my ficus audrey leaves, mostly on newer leaves, and only about 5-10% of the plant. I see no signs of spider mites or any other infestation... does anyone no what there could be? I'm not discounting infestation either way. Again, they are new this week. Could it be from over misting the plant? I realized yesterday that I probably shouldn't be doing that and wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of reaction to moisture on new tender leaves....See Morephoggie
