cardboard boxes as a layer before compost and mulch

Not really a critical question, but something I'm curious about...
I finally realized all those boxes I get from deliveries could make for a good layer above the dirt, and before the compost and mulch, when trying to turn the dirt into soil that is more alive. My question... the boxes sometimes have big staples. So I'm assuming those big staples will decompose over a longer period of time, and provide iron to the soil, in the form of rust. So they are good to just leave there, assuming they'll be under enough mulch that nobody will step on the rusted staples. Does that logic sound right?
