Nova, you sure get some interesting things up your way. I have yet to see a house finch in Florida, as they have only moved into the state in recent years. Where they are established, they are becoming plentiful, but they are still not established statewide. Not sure how I feel about them yet. They are so pretty, and have such a beautiful song, that most folks seem to accept them without feeling the frustration they get from some of the other birds moving into the state from other places. (House finches are western birds who have begun to move eastward en masse. They are now plentiful up and down the eastern seaboard, though Florida is just in the early stages of their encroachment.) Since they are native to North America, perhaps it is easier to accept them here. But whether folks love them or hate them, I sure would like to see some. Enjoy yours. They sing like canaries! Those two are on my "possibles" list, thank you! It has so many indications of either one. Really looks more like the Fox, but is small like the Song. Just watched it fly, and it has a woodpecker-type movement. My National Geographic bird book says the Song pumps it's tail in flight. Also, the Fox would be quite out of it's winter range, but that's certainly not unheard of. I'm leaning toward the Song sparrow. Hope I can get a better look at it's head today.

Ospreys have very distinct wing shape and tail/wing pattern that are still evident in these photos.

Yes, he looks just like the pictures at the link Patti posted. The feeder has a little cup of grape jelly between the oranges. I'm hopeful...... :-) The baby bird hadn't mastered flying when I was looking at him. I went in the house to process these pictures and post my question, and when I went back outside he had disappeared. Do birds suddenly "get" flying? Or do you think maybe his parents encouraged him to go somewhere else? We've had a nest of baby house wrens in a birdhouse hanging from the porch. They all managed to leave without me seeing their flying lessons. I see them around, though. And hear them! There's a catbird next in a big mulberry bush. I never knew catbirds had such a beautiful song. And, as always, robins and phoebes are nesting in my garage. With so many interesting things going on around the property, I hate to leave for work!
