Why are my new watermelons turning black and going away??
Comments (4)Are watermelons hard to pollinate naturally? I see bees and other flying insects in the garden, although in truth I never see them on the watermelons.... After seeing your answer, I tried hand pollination....I took a very fine camel hair paintbrush and swirled it around in each flower, several times, about 15 flowers in all, several seconds in each flower, trying to gently force the camel hairs into the tightly packed stuff at the center of each bloom. I went from end to end, back and forth doing each flower twice. When finished the paintbrush was covered in yellow pollen. Am I doing it correctly, do you think?...See MoreDo Some Plants Always Fail for You?
Comments (32)I rip Lily of the Valley out every year as it smothers my more choice perennials but can't get rid of it. It is in dry shade under a Cornus kousa and next to a boxwood hedge. I've even painted leaves with Round Up as I can't spray among the ferns, huecheras, hellebores and everything else and still it lives. I don't mind a small patch as I do love the scent but this one has spread almost ten feet.... My Daphne odora marginata is planted near the front door, under an upright Japanese Maple. House faces south. It survived a renovation of the front stoop and walkway, was stepped on and had chunks of broken concrete on it but thrived. I don't do anything special to it at all. I can't believe it lived through the construction. It was recently planted when that happened. It is about 30" wide and 24" tall now and about to bloom....See Morewhy did your crosses fail
Comments (7)Heat must play a role here. If I can get to the flowers as they open in the early am, even if it is hot, above 87 degrees, they still will take, but not always set seed. It just swells up and then the flower will fall off. I think if it were not for the heat, that those swollen flowers would set seed. Almost any pollen I use early in the late spring, before the humidity sets in will take and produce seed pods. I like using the streaky seedlings that have been growing over winter because they flower very early, and I get a lot of streaked seedlings from my seedlings every year. Mary Ann, my named streakers did not flower this year well either. I think it was because they were moved last year, and I am hopeing for some bloom from them next season. If not, I am cutting back tree limbs for more sun. The only streaked seedlings I got were from Liberty Bell, a streaked NOID from Foxwillows, and my streaked seedlings from 05/06 winter seed starting....See MoreWHY do swing arm lamps always show cord?
Comments (25)I agree with Marcolo on visual comfort. My lights were back ordered and they did not even call or email me. I realized that the lights had not arrived and called them and they had some lame excuse like we were not sure about your zip code.. I have the Boston swing arm and it is not as adjustable as I would like. I have the double jointed one but it is kind of tight and hard to adjust. If you are truly looking for a great reading light in bed, I would highly recommend a LED that is Dimmable. It does not get warm and the light throw can be very tight allowing your SO to sleep without the glare of the light. I love the Holtkotter Bernie because the light is just fabulous. My DD's reading nook has it. But for our bedside, I got the Night owl light by lightology. It is 3watts I think. The feedback was that the gooseneck on this is high quality and does not get floppy.
