Meeting Builder What about out requirements?
Comments (11)Our GC had a wonderful exercise for us. His assignment even before we met was to have DH & me write out our top 20 items/ideas for the house (in order of importance). We did this seperarately w/o knowing each other's top 20. We then brought this list to GC on our first meeting. This enabled him to get the big picture. We also took these lists to the architect. Along with this list, was a photo of what we desired & a layout we thought we liked. As the process has developed, all of our smaller, nitpicky items have come out. GC has appreciated the thought process that I've put into it all. He said it has made everything move smoothly. In the end, I will have less daily choices to make. Although I did SO much research prior to all of our meetings, I have welcomed GC's ideas & knowledge, as well. Afterall, we are hiring him for his skills, knowledge, & expertise. He has been doing this 30+ years & I have only just recently begun this process. I definitely would not go into this seeming like a total know-it-all or you will make GC's life quite unpleasant. Also, in all honesty, about 90% of our desires for our home, GC had already planned for, so I would really be looking for the best GC you can find....See MoreOpinions and Suggestions Welcome+ Lots of Pics for SuziNJ
Comments (18)i like the look of the 'encased' stove also - just not that close to the actual stove. i'd feel too closed in. it's good you put up the blocks to try it out for a few days. i've seen them where the 'side walls' are farther away - like to the end of the counter to the left of your stove and maybe 1 cabinet more to the right of it. somone did that on here - the spanish kitchen - and i loved it! but she had a BIG space for her stove. but again, everyone is different. i don't like closed spaces or heights. I think i'd also move the double ovens over to the end of the other counter run - to the right of the sink. you'd have the island to mix and put things together, then just turn around and pop it into the oven. if making cookies you could pull them out of the oven and slide them onto the counter top behind. pop another sheet of cookies into the oven. and just have a counter run to the right of the fridge too. i think it'd look more open in the area by the door on the left of your stove area if that wall wasn't floor to ceiling cabinets/appliances too. it looks a bit congested in that area....See MoreWelcome to RP! Comments (35)Hello everyone, My name is PAM. I write it in all CAPS as there used to be about five Pam's here and this was an easy way to help differentiate. Not an ego thing, honestly. I hail from central PA. I have been on RP since the mid-1990's and remember the Spike years and being "Disneyed". I visit here regularly but have posted less frequently since I 1) got divorced and 2) started to work full time. But now I am getting back to RP and it feels great to be back "home" amongst friends. George Gissing is my favorite writer and I tend to go on and on about him occasionally. I do enjoy the classics but need to read more of them. As I get older, I find I am spending less time on fluff and more time on the non-fiction and the classics. (Present book club book EXCEPTED... ugh... true crime by Ann Rule.. someone SAVE me, please.) I read almost anything except romance, western and sci-fi. LOVE well-written non-fiction especially micro-histories. I shall definitely be crushed one day by my books. I love to garden but need more time. I enjoy needlework but need more time. And when it comes right down to it... I put away the needlework, let the weeds grow, and pick up a book. I am in three book clubs but often just show up for the wine. (AstroKath... Rosemont Estates is one of my favorites.) My favorite thing about RP is that reading is such a solitary passion (not hobby, PASSION), but here at RP, I can share with like-minded, intelligent, kind, people. Oh, and I am engaged and soon to be married. Life is so good. PAM...See MoreHow many meetings with custom home builder before signing contract?
Comments (13)We have a gem of a builder! We knew he was the "right one" after the second meeting. That said, he has worked with us through three separate house plans. The first ones were drafted before we met him, and it was b/c we decided to shop the plans after getting what we thought was an inflated price from the GC/Developer we had purchased the lot from that we met him; those plans were scrapped for a variety of reasons -- too many design compromises were going to leave us w/a nice house, but not the same house we had envisioned for 8 months. We worked with/our "now" builder through two more sets of plans (a departure and finally our third and final plan that represents the best of both worlds!) We logged more than 200 hours of meetings w/our "now" builder before ever signing a contract -- and that doesn't count the hours he accompanied us at the Architect, building supply, millwork shop, window vendor, etc. He stood by us through a lengthy sales process for our former residence and an unexpected change in employment. It's not like we're not his only build, he has 7-8 going right now, but I still get daily calls and texts w/progress reports, am welcome at the building site "anytime," and usually meet 1-2 times a week at the site (including weekends!) just to recap what has been done and prep for what is coming up next. This is the way he treats all his builds! We feel absolutely blessed and are so very grateful to have him heading up our build. Everything really does happen for a reason -- even though you usually lose sight of that when you're in the midst of things. Best of luck to you on your build!...See Morecpartist
