Need help with backsplash tile choices

I plan to replace the microwave over the range in my kitchen with a wall-mounted range hood and am looking for tiles to fill up the wall that was covered by the microwave oven and the cabinet above it.

I tried to find the same tile with the current ones in kitchen ( 3x6 glass grey+blue tile) but failed in either local tile stores or online stores. So now I'm thinking to use tile of different color or even different size/pattern/material instead. Please look at the photos of the range. Any suggestion/idea on the choice of tile to fill up the wall above the range are highly appreciated!

P.S. I'm open to remove the existing tiles in the wall above the range if that's a must.

Maybe a stainless or metallic tile? If you have even 4 tiles left from the original, you could make a diamond pattern on the center of the space surrounded by metallic tiles so it flows. Or remove a whole section behind range, and use those tile remnants to make a cracked tile border to frame a different tile.

If you removed the tile behind the range you could replace it with a sheet of stainless steel, but here's the thing....is your range hood going to be stainless steel? If so, cover the exposed wall with a small strip of stainless steel and leave the tile alone. It's the easiest fix, and it will look fine. Your tile has some thickness to it, and stainless is thin, so you'll have to mount the metal strip on a wood spacer of whatever that thickness is, in order for the stainless to be flush with the tile and the hood.

Thanks so much for your feedback! BeanPiele, I could probably afford the expensive stuff ($60-77/sf), but I have a modest house that had never been updated before I moved in. I want the dream kitchen, but there are still a lot of projects to tackle in the future and, while I plan to be here for a number of years, a question about return of investment. EAM44, Fireclay seems like a fab company - they're the only ones that offered free(!) samples. And you have a very good point about the savings. I've got ~35 sf to cover, not huge, I suppose, but it all adds up. I'm realizing that I think I need to adjust my expectations to better plan for future projects. Any thoughts about color, quality and value between Fireclay, Heath, Ann Sacks and, say, Home Depot?

JMarino, I am not sure yet how dark will we go with floors but I do not think we will go much darker then the color we have. The tile will run in kitchen only. I did not include the original layout we have, but the kitchen is edged by the peninsula you see on the plan (which now is bearing wall) and the other floor that divides kitchen and dining room. Not sure yet what tile we will pick. I think it will depend on the material and color of the counter top we pick. We will be closing window in the kitchen (where the stove is on the plan) but have pretty big window (three in fact and they are on the south side) in the living room. Lots of light there but still we will be closing window in the kitchen. The plan is to run recessed light s, pendant light above peninsula. There will be a hood (most likely chimney like) over range. There will be cabinet over fridge. Plan was to have enclosed hood over the range but that plan just changed today when we bought hood (chimney wall mount hood-SS). So we will need to change that part of plan now.

Hi Chispa, House is a townhouse built in 1996, trying to modernize the look. As far as decorating style, I like modern/contemporary, nothing too funky. Something that would be cohesive with the rest of the kitchen, and bring the kitchen to life a little. It's very white right now.

I guess if I were you I'd continue the search. Can you pry off one tile and see if there's a name on them? They just look so familiar. . .here's a link with some blue grey glass tiles.

Oh don't do that! Glass tiles break, chip, splinter, just ask the middle finger on my right hand. I had to have surgery to remove glass shards left behind after I cut myself removing glass tile from my bathroom. If it is mortared into place leave it alone!

I'm with EAM. A stainless steel sheet unless you can locate the exact tile. They also come in patterns.

Other options: stainless steel tiles or totally different tiles, but I have to say in my opinion it's not worth it..

Maybe a caustic tile look.
