In celebration of the year of the monkey, dinner last night was Chinese take out. For today, Shrove or Fat Tuesday we are stuffing ourselves with paczki and jambalaya.

Thanks, Nancy. It has been a pretty good year in a lot of ways. Mantis, I have been very please with Kansas City Kicker. An excellent plant. You asked about Tree turtles. It is as tall as the specs say it will be. (56") It is a late here and while it opens fine in the mornings, The original bloom is very pretty to me, and doesn't resemble what it will look like in an hour or so. Take a look at the very early bloom: But, as you can see, it is a lovely pink and yellow bloom after a short wait and it is an excellent bloomer. kay

Karen, these are really nice. Since you have Monday and Tuesday here in one post I feel I get to pick a favorite from each day and thats just what I am going to do. I am picking Jordan Verhaert as my favorite from Mondays batch and Daybreak Fantasy as my favorite from Tuesday.

WOI has over 22 scapes and is over maxed on its buds. Sometimes the over amount of buds hampers WOI blooms from opening fully. But it is still a gorgeous cultivar. Yes, we have deer. We have temporary fencing surrounding most of the garden areas but if they really wanted to come and take a taste, they could easily jump the fencing. We have alot of open fields so perhaps they have enough to eat...for now. The turtle is still here this morning so we think we may have to get the tractor with the bucket and scoop it up and put in down by the stream. I read on the internet how dangerous they can be if they are threatened so I have no desire to lose my fingers and those claws don't look too inviting either. I have 6 Lambertson's still here. 2 will bloom for the first time this year(WASHED WATERCOLOR,AWESOME APPLIQUE) after 3 seasons. I don't even know if the cultivars are what they are suppose to be. 3 others bloomed magnificently last year(CAVE CREEK CANYON, CANYON COLORS,MESOZOIC MUNCH) after 2 seasons here and increased nicely and then this spring I could already see issues with those 3 struggling. I'm wondering if they lack the stamina to have alot of blooms one season and then come back and do it all over again the next season. The last one is BLUE-EYED BUTTERFLY which does great here. It just started blooming today. PURPLE CROWNED FAIRY died first season, got a replacement and that one died also. I'm not going for a 3rd time. Julia

What Have You All Been Doing Lately?

Not sure if anyone wants to read what all I have been doing. My mother who is her nineties is going to have mohs surgery next week. It needs to be changed twice a day for two weeks and I have been on the phone continually trying to find help. Her request was to be able to live in her home and its getting very stressful. Nurses won't come out since its not skilled nursing, . I called another agency this morning and the director lives close to her. Hopefully if they can't help, they can give me the name of a qualified person we can hire. The nurses said they can teach someone to help, but they cannot do this as its not skilled nursing. I understand, but its very hard when you live 3 hours away. She has refused to come live with us, and we are trying very hard to keep her happy at home. I was up in the night looking on the internet for help in her small town.

When dh called last night and said he was coming home for a couple days I thought about getting a king cake, but decided against it. He's picking up a pizza Margherita tonight.

not only an English tradition, but an old New England one, too.

ETA our Publix had paczkis and king cakes, first time I've ever seen either one there. They also had hot cross buns although it's way too early for those.

It's so early this year that I forgot about it until I saw Carnival news on Deutsche Welle News from Berlin, which I watch while I'm home at lunch. The weather appears to be quite mild in Europe at this time of year - I've not checked U.S. weather, but it is unseasonably hot here - 87° at lunch.

Lars, it's snowing here, temps in the low twenties and dropping, below zero by the weekend.

I forgot all about Fat Tuesday AND year of the monkey, so we had burritos and beans with rice for supper, LOL. I'm betting I can get some half price paczkis tomorrow, though!

Just got back from DW's little 1840s little episcopal church where I was supposed to flip pancakes for their Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras pancake supper (hi writersblock). I was supposed to cover the second hour shift but most guests had already been served so I mainly just got to eat pancakes and sausage (and drink sweet tea since we're down in the south.)

Lars, it's 11 degrees here and headed to minus territory tonight. I'll take a double helping of your weather, please. :-)

Italian sausage & cream sauce over penne pasta here. I saved some of the sauce and put it over some leftover rice for me.

With parties! Pancakes for breakfast -- a tradition. Company for a NO style lunch of red beans and rice and bread pudding and then a women's club party where we had jambalaya, cornbread, muffuletta sliders, shrimp and spinach artichoke dip as well as pralines, petit fours and bread pudding! Let the good times roll!
