Will having a dark exterior make my house hot on the inside?
I have an older board and batten cedar house that is a hideous wine color. I want to paint it a dark blue/grey. Will it make my house hot in the summer? I think it will be hard to paint it a lighter color since it is already a darker red. I attached a pic to give an idea of what color it is now. I am in Texas so making the house hotter would probably be an issue. But I wonder since it is a darker color, it may not make that much of a difference. Our summer bill is a lot less than our winter bill. It is waaay more expensive to heat the house than to cool it.

Comments (17)Hey thanks for the update. As for powerwwashing, I think I'll have someone else do that, unless there really is not much to it as long as your careful, then I'll go out and buy one. I agree though, it needs powerwashing. My quote was for one oil primer stain and one coat of stain. Is painting a house this size that difficult , especially the second floor or is it most just time consuming? Had a trusted contractor come over about siding, he suggesting staining if were are really going to move in 3 years, (we might be moving) otherwise side it with the cedar like siding in the front and regular siding on the sides and rear; cost $10-15K depending on material and options, but $15K tops. Look it, I'm a DIY kind of guy and believe in doing things the right way, Ive' installed patio doors, doors, done window trim, floor trim, painted too many rooms to count, cabinets installation and when it comes to landscaping, well I love it. Taking on staining a big house , well a little overwhelming thinking about it. buying equipment that can alway be used later in life doesn't bother me (or the wife, thank god). We are very pleased! CEfreeman-Ohhh, what a long, peaceful country driveway that is! I wouldn't want it to look too "maintained!" Hi Lyfia! I posted quite awhile ago, I was very gung ho on the faux wood grain...as a matter of fact, I wanted to do a faux carriage door look, adding the rustic hardware. Most people were against it...and this was when I was planning on painting my house a dark color. Now that my house is so light, I don't want a big dark expanse that takes up such a huge chunk of the front. If my house were bigger, or the paint darker,I would consider it. I do love that look, just not for this house at this time. birdlover-yes, we are thinking two big black pots on either side of the arch...and maybe on the far side of the garage...with bougainvilla or some flowering vine set on a trellis just a bit off from the house walls so they don't actually grow on the walls! The reason we are thinking black pots is...when you drive to our house, you first see the south side of it...with a row of windows with black awnings over each window. Comments (28)No plans to screen in. There are bugs, but when they are most present we don’t like hanging outside anyway. In my area I do t see many screened in porches. With good mosquito repellant it would take care of most so I would today first. I do like it more than I thought because now my kids play on the concrete patio and we still have outdoor covered area. Plus, I like 3-4 open sides vs 2 from attached to house because there is more air flow increasing comfort....See More
8 years agoI have thought about sun fade. I figure that is a risk. I can always change my mind later (something I am really good at...). The people that had the house before used paint on the cedar, so I can't re-stain it. They actually ruined all the cedar and it would cost a fortune to replace. I am basically trying to band-aid it. It's so ugly to me and have lived with it for 10 years and am fed up with it.I figure if I want to go to a lighter color, it would be easier with a dark blue than a red. If I wanted to go a lighter blue later, it would be an easier transition color-wise. I just don't want a purple house. :)
Our house has a steel standing seam roof. It is the basic galvalume color. My husband was in the steel building business for years. So he knows what kind of steel to use and not use down here. Our roof looks like new still.
I was planning on putting some fruit trees on the west side of the house where there is no shrubbery. That would help cut down the sun beating up that side of the house.
My house is on 60 acres. Our neighbors aren't close. So I don't have to worry about that. haha. Found some old pictures of the house when we first bought it to give you an idea.
8 years agoIt's a beautiful color but wonder how it will look without all that white trim to set it off? It's hard for me to see if you have trim that you'll paint a different color. If not, what would you think of something more gray, maybe a little more informal to fit with your wooded setting? I'm not suggesting you leave it, but just have to say the red sure looks gorgeous with that sunset!
