How do you apply diatomateous earth?
Comments (8)DE has silicon that plants need to form cell walls. It is beneficial, not harmful. You will notice that you use food grade which means it's edible. You can apply with a duster. Try to avoid breathing it. It does have silica which is harmful to lung tissue. If you remember DE is the Skelton's of diatoms from the ocean. If you're concerned about the silica, remember it is also in perlite. So better stop using that too. I myself use a larger form for a soil amendment. I don't use perlite, I use DE. But the food grade powered stuff is not good as a soil amendment. You need the larger size. It's a lot more useful than perlite. A much better amendment than perlite. I use optisorb, an oil absorbent. Many oil absorbents are clay, but Optisorb is 100% DE, in a nice larger granule. Some info about DE http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0341816212001841 http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0341816211001615 http://scihub.org/ABJNA/PDF/2010/5/ABJNA-1-5-1076-1089.pdf http://www.axisplayball.com/home_htm_files/AXIS%20for%20POTTING%20SOIL.pdf...See MoreChickens how do we chose a breed??
Comments (7)You don't say where in Ontario... it will make a difference when thinking about frostbite hazzard. I live in Prince Edward County, just south of Trenton and Belleville. We get damp winds off the Lake that make frostbite more of a hazzard. I have Speckled Sussex hens - a big dual-purpose breed - and I like them very much, but after losing our rooster to frostbite last winter, I am switching to Dominiques, which have a rose combs and should not suffer as much. As appealing as mixed flocks may be, I strongly suggest you get your feet wet by ordering just one breed. You can always add others later on. This will keep conflict to a minimum because birds always seem to peck on the ones that look different. Make sure you have everything in place before you get the chickens. It will make it a much more pleasant event for both you and the birds. Check out some websites, buy a book or two, decide how many you want to start with and find a chicken house design that will work well in your setting. If you read back in this forum you will find many of your questions already discussed in detail. It's a good place to start. If you are looking for an Ontario source for chickens, Performance Poultry here in the County has a wonderful selection of chickens available. I always buy from there. I know I will get heathy birds that are good representatives of their breed. Jason Cain, the owner, is a very pleasant person who is knowledgeable and caring. Comments (6)She keeps telling me to just do it... that it's just folding and "maniuplating" the fabric... I know it's not. You are correct. These things can be as complicated as a tailored suit. I've seen patterns for them in old home decorating books - they show the shape of the pieces and have a grid. What's confusing you is that the tab thing in the center is not attached to the swag: it's a separate flap. Also, it's a mix of a "fishtail" valance and a gathered swag ... probably cut and sewn separately My mistake: it's a double swag with the panel (called a "trumpet"). I found a 3-part how to do a swag valance ... she's pleating it and stapling it to the board, It starts with the calculations, then cutting and then pleating it onto the board http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcHHU0n680s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ebrSwt30sU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ebrSwt30sU She has a whole series on swags! Comments (4)favabeans, thanks for the photo. that is how my lower corner cabinet opens and I bet that is how my upper was supposed to have been done. They'll just need attach those doors together like the lower ones. Annes_arbor, I might be able to change the hinge side but I think I'd still have knob interference when fully opened. Thanks!...See MoreAvatarWalt
