Chickens how do we chose a breed??

We are hoping to buy a farm soon, and wish to raise chickens. How do you chose the breed. We want egg-layers, but what kind? Does the weather influence the decision? Are some more hardy than others? What about temperments?

Any suggestions?

1. what color eggs do you want? white, green, brown, a mix?
2. do you have any preference in bird color?
3. what are your summers and winters like?
4. do you plan on eating extra birds?
5. do you plan on letting them go broody to hatch for you?
6. how much space can be provided for them?
7. do you mind flighty birds or do you prefer more docile ones? (breeds are known for their temperment, but there are exceptions among individuals.
8. what size eggs, bantam or standard? (you can also keep them together)

some of the more common standard, dual purpose birds are orpingtons, wyandottes, new hampshire reds, rocks, australorps, sex links, giants, delawares, easter eggers, rhode islands, leghorns, anconas, turkens, brahmas

I see that you are in Canada.. With the cold weather I would suggest heavy breeds with rose combs. The rose combs are less likely to get frostbite. I live in Texas and my standard combed hens actually got frost bite on them last year. I wish I could be of more help but cold is not a major problem here.. You will love having your own chickens, They are such a hoot to have around.. Kit

I bet that Hamburgs would do well, as would leghorns or Old English Games. Almost anything light and active would probably do well. I raise Kraienkoppes which do great foraging for bugs. But with any chicken you'll have to keep them away from tender small plants, tomatoes and anything newly planted. I simply don't let my chickens into the garden. Instead, I'm building a small duck pen in one corner of the garden. I have 10 Indian Runner ducklings on order. My plan is to keep them in the pen when things are small and delicate and then start running them in the garden when real grasshopper infestations begin. I'll use low, temporary chicken wire fences for later plantings; to keep the ducks from trampling or eating tender seedlings. We'll see how it works! George Tahlequah, OK

Wihtout knowing it, it seems that I was doing the right thing, my plants are very close to one another, and I let the bees and butterflies do the job. All I did was harvest the seeds, sow them and wait for the results. And the results are beyond my best dreams even if they are not spectacular. I do like your plants a lot, they are very nice! Congratulations! I did't expect that, but I'm still discovering new stuff in my first batch, the 2007 batch. Most carry many blooms on branching stems. I found this pink one that looks similar to your double white one, very short florets that still let you see the cone (I have 3 or 4 like this): Then I have this pink one with 3 layers of petals: And I have several pink ones that have more petals than usual and the petals are much wider giving a fuller look to the flower: From the new batch, the 2008 batch, they are from different mothers and fathers from the previous batch, and several plants have buds coming up, the should begin to open within a month or so. One (only for now) shows variegation as mentioned previously. The leaves of most are lighter and brighter than the 2007 ones. They are also much larger than I've ever seen in any echinaceas. I took these pix of one of the largest one, but most are very close this in size: 30 cm long by 15 cm wide (12 x 6 inches)! I can't wait to seee the flowers on these! Let me hope that the size of the leaves are an indication of the size of the blooms! I have no idea where all this will lead me but I really do have fun discovering all these new cultivar. I'll only keep the best ones, the strong ones that have some very distincts caracteristics. dm It is hard to define the exact dimesions of our rooms because many of them have angled walls. But here are rough dimensions and the lights we used Family room is roughly 20' x 25' and adjoins the kitchen, morning room and dining room as well as three hallways (one that leads to the foyer, one to a study, and one to a utility room and exit into the garage.) A bar in the kitchen separates it from the family room and in the back of the family room has a curved wall for the steps going to the second floor. The FR has a fireplace and in the corner (on a diagonal wall) will have a built in cabinet for a TV. Here we used a large semi flush decorative light in the center, 3 cans that illuminate the path around the wall for the stairs, 3 low voltage 4 inch cans that illuminate the fireplace mantel, and 3 low voltage cans that illuminate the built in cabinet. The kitchen dimensions are roughly 20' x 12' and it includes an island and a bar. In this room we have a chadelier fixture over the island, 2 four inch cans over the main sink, 6 six inch cans that illiminate walking areas and counters, 4 four inch cans over the bar, and above/below cabinet low voltage lighting. The morning room is roughly 11' x 12' and connects to the kitchen and the family room. Here we have 1 chandelier fixture, no cans. The dining room (this room is actually a rectangle) connects to the family room as well - is roughly 16' x 14'. In this room we have 2 four inch cans that illuminate 2 niches that are on one end of the room and a chandelier in the center of the room. The hallway into the foyer also has 2 cans to illuminate the pathway. The basic concept we used is: each room has one decorative fixture as the main light, then the cans focus light on to work areas or create path ways for walking around when it is dark. The low voltage lighting is used in areas where there would be shaddows or where we needed some accent lights. Each entry/exit for each room has a controller that can turn on the lights for that space as well as near by spaces that connect to it. This is a real challenge with an open foor plan - there are so many ways in and out of rooms. The family room was the biggest challenge since there are 3 adjoining rooms and three hall/path entrances. We are using Insteon remote control switches and controllers to provide the capability to turn lights on and off from multiple locations throughout the space. I hope this helps.

I'm going with aussie mix (or any shepherd/collie mix) as well. The docked tail is a sign, as well as the high set ears that stand out. Also, the intelligence you describe totally points to aussie - one of the smartest breeds around. (My own aussie is shaved, and his ears totally look like your dog's). The "face-splitting" grin is a big aussie give-away. See if he has one of those :)

Great advice here! :)

Chickens are generally a safe bet no matter the breed--they all lay eggs. :) If you have cold weather, heavy, fluffy breeds with rose combs are good, since they are less likely to suffer from frostbite. Here in southern California I have to worry about the opposite problem--heat. So take your weather into consideration. Check feathersite.com for loads of breed pics, it can really help.

Some generalizations (and there are always exceptions): Silkies and cochins are great broodies and moms, Rhode Island Reds can tend to be mean and 'pack up' like wolves (also they can ruthlessly peck and feather pick at more timid birds), Leghorns are great for eggs but aren't big on personality and have HUGE combs, Polish tend to be skittish (due to limited sight because of their large crests, when I trimmed some feathers on mine they were fine), crested breeds in general can suffer more easily from head injuries due to their open skulls, banties are smart but can run wild if left to open range.

Some breeds known for their sweet and gentle temperments include Buff Orpingtons, Americaunas (Easter Eggers, they lay the pastel colored eggs), Jersey Giants, Cochins, Silkies, Mille Fleurs and Brahmas.

Chickens are great, they are wonderful to have around and are fun to watch to boot. :)

I'm an as-yet chicken-less newbie myself but Buff Orpingtons were recommended to me as easy-going, not-much-flying, dual-purpose birds. They're supposed to be very easy to tame for a city girl like myself. 2nd place went to Australorps, which are derived from Orpingtons and lay even more eggs.

That's not my own wisdom, I'm just passing it along.

I don't have any experience with other breeds but I love my Australorps. They are docile (take an endless amount of crap offa my toddler, who likes to chase and pet them), friendly and lay jumbo sized brown eggs. They're beautiful too.

I think a variety is nice, for me it would be boring to have just one breed :)

You don't say where in Ontario... it will make a difference when thinking about frostbite hazzard. I live in Prince Edward County, just south of Trenton and Belleville. We get damp winds off the Lake that make frostbite more of a hazzard.

I have Speckled Sussex hens - a big dual-purpose breed - and I like them very much, but after losing our rooster to frostbite last winter, I am switching to Dominiques, which have a rose combs and should not suffer as much.

As appealing as mixed flocks may be, I strongly suggest you get your feet wet by ordering just one breed. You can always add others later on. This will keep conflict to a minimum because birds always seem to peck on the ones that look different.

Make sure you have everything in place before you get the chickens. It will make it a much more pleasant event for both you and the birds. Check out some websites, buy a book or two, decide how many you want to start with and find a chicken house design that will work well in your setting. If you read back in this forum you will find many of your questions already discussed in detail. It's a good place to start.

I know I will get heathy birds that are good representatives of their breed. Jason Cain, the owner, is a very pleasant person who is knowledgeable and caring.
