Canadian scion wood? Konrad?

Sorry to spam everyone but Houzz does not allow personal messaging (stupid). So this is for Konrad or anyone else in a cold region of Canada.

I'm running out of space so would like to start grafting but finding a good selection of cold hardy scion wood in Canada is not easy. I have stuff to trade (see my profile) or I would be happy to pay per stick + shipping. It seems like you have a great selection of cold hardy stuff.

Konrad, I think if you can PM me because I am following you. Or you (or others) can post here.

Thanks.

Yeah damaged wood by winterkill can look so good for a very long time when cut but you just never know until they dry up. How cold did it get so far Ubro? Here in town around minus 33C twice and probably around 38 at the orchard... another milder/ average winter so far. If your'e on higher elevation, [think you are] then you can add about another half zone.

I've witnessed a unbelievable temperature difference just last Friday the first time when driving on airport road toward the airport, right before Nisku there is a little valley, it was minus 25C down low and up in Nisku which is only about 3min. away it was minus 14C...11 degrees difference...winter kill has allot to do with duration of the the very cold also.

    For scion wood koniilg@live.ca

We have had a winter low of only -36C, according to my records, and that is pretty good for us. Actually not a bad winter all in all. It is interesting, we used to consistently reach -40C for days on end ( and no wind chill was factored in back then). My kids would miss up to a week of school because of bus cancellations, now it is rare. I do remember a winter where it reached -50C.

I am zone pushing so I don't mind if a tree has some tip kill and a scion or two doesn't take for me. But when I give to others I do not want to disappoint them if they do not grow.

I will contact you for scions soon.

  • pkafieh

Thank you for being frank. It is not a problem. I don't think we understand true Canadian winters here in Southern Ontario. My kids' school board has already had 4 bus cancellation or "snow days" for the kids this school......usually just 5-10 cm of snow. Just our perspective I guess.

When Houzz bought Gardenweb and started changing things a large number (majority) of heavy posters migrated to a forum a private member started. It has much more activity than here and is independent. Every couple years we kick in some $$ for hosting. Don't want to risk having this post removed so just google ''My Backyard planting experience (Part 2) - Zone 4a/b Quebec''. I cross post my annual reports so you will find it there.

    $2 each.

  • Yve Leroy

    Where’s that, do they ship?

  • Sherwood Botsford (z3, Alberta)

Not usually. It's an exchange. It's not a company. Here's some hints:

    * My posts show up as z3 Alberta.
    * So U of A, must be something related to the University of Alberta.
    * The U of A is in Edmonton.
    * So google alberta scion wood exchange.

More significantly: Most major cities in Alberta have some form of similar group to the Devonian Fruit Growers Group. If you are in zone 5b you are not on the Prairies. But since you don't put any info on your profile it's hard to give specifics. Zone 5b could be large parts of BC, much of Ontario near the lakes, lots of Quebec close to the St. Lawrence, and pretty much anything in the Maritimes.

Yeah sure would like that also but beware!! I bought grafts from a guy here and out of the 10 of them not a single one took. I grafted a dozen more at the same time a friend gave me and 100% took. I wasted money. But with that said keep me in the loop!

I would hate to disparage any person who sells or trades scions on this forum.

We should remember that everyone does try their best and if we get our scions mailed the added stress from drying out as well as mould or the temperatures they are subject to in transition can affect the grafting success.

I am only posting this in the hopes that those selling scions continue to do so, your service is appreciated, Canadian scion sources are so rare.

pkafieh, I have some Chestnut as well but I can not 100% guarantee that it is actually Chestnut as it has not fruited yet. I'm working on my updated list of what I am growing now that Gardenregister disappeared.

Yve Leroy(5b), I hope you gave feedback to the person who provided the scions and hopefully they will either re-imburse you or send you repeats. Sometimes weird things happen (In my case last year a beautiful 3' waterspout of Goldrush that I took scion from ended up being fully winterkilled...).

WANTED: As an aside, anyone have rootstock sources for OHxF 87 (Whiffletree now
only has 333). Also looking for Mariana 2624 and Myrobalan.

So here is what I have growing/grafted. Some were only grafted last year and others are small. Some I want to graft to rootstock myself. So in otherwords I can't guarente I will have enough of everything to share. It also takes a TON of time to cut, sterilize, pack, label and ship so I don't promise that I will send to everyone who requests. First priority to trades then might be willing to send for $/scion + shipping. PM me (don't respond in forum, it makes the post to long) your requests, how many sticks of each you want and what you have to trade. I'll get back to you. I also lost my Pristine on Bud9 and all attached grafts due to windstorm in the fall that broke it at the graft union despite being staked. Note that apple and pear list is not in alphabetical order but rough ripening order.

Hey hungryfrozencanuck, I live in Ottawa, I think were pretty close to each other? I thought I ordered Crimson Crisp from Whiffletree this year but just checked my invoice and it’s not there. Any chance I could get you to send me a few scions of it? Reading your reviews of it has got me intrigued.

Not sure I have anything that would interest you. Whiffletree sold me a Sandra Rose Cherry about 3 years ago that has actually surprisingly survived at my family property up in lanark Where other sweet cherries havent lasted long. I could send you some if interested or just wire you some cash

Yve Leroy(5b), I generally prefer to trade as the work it takes to cut, label, package and ship can’t be charged the actual cost (would be too expensive). That said I frequently have leftovers after trades that I do sell off. PM me via my profile with your email address and where you are located.

@hungryfrozencanuck how are your trees doing this year? We had such a drought my new trees grew very little, though I'm happy they survived at all.

Do you think you'll have scions this year?

I tried to join the Alberta scion fb group, but as I'm not in Alberta they did not let me join. (and there doesn't seem to be the same interest in Manitoba, sadly!)
