Planting roses in groups?

I'm planning a new (small) rose/perennial border in front of a stone retaining wall in my Kansas (zone 5) garden. All the books I have referenced suggest planting roses in groups of 3. What spacing is recommended when planting this way? I'm aiming for a 50foot long curving border but only about 5 feet wide. I want some variety in color and type of rose. I would welcome any recommendations.
