DR Window Treatment Advice?
Comments (9)I think we often worry far too much about covering a little bit of a window or a sidelight opening with drapery. Curtains will almost always cover some of the side of the glass, particularly when the builder or designer has slammed the opening up against an interior corner. The point of drapery is only partly to close off the light or the ability to see into the house. You hang lovely things as part of furnishing a room with a cohesive scheme. So thinking only of the relationship to the window instead of the larger relationship to the room and the house makes the job much harder, and more likely to produce an unsatisfying result. So in your case, I think you should curtain both windows in the same way, from the ceiling to the floor, with panels that are the same width, and generous enough to look good in the room, even though you don't need to close them for privacy. The panels on the high window can hang out to the sides, covering only the side trim, while the others can cover part of the sidelights. In this way, you will equalize the visual width of the two windows, and add warmth and softeness to your pretty, simple dining room. I would also recommend that you find another spot for the cabinet we see at the left of the photo, and add a long, shallow table to stand under the high window to ground it on that wall. Paint the HVAC register to match the wall, and you will have a cohesive, balanced, welcoming place....See MorePossibly flipping DR and Kitchen, Advice Needed
Comments (7)emilyam819, I am sorry, I thought I replied to your comment, must not have hit the submit button and I got rid of the tab so now I am reconstructing my response :-( Behind our bay window is a finished enclosed porch, we will not be flattening it and we also have a lot of pipes in that short wall to the right of the door from the porch that we don't want to move, so I don't think we can do the expanded laundry/mudroom/entry way you suggested. I did try working with the bay window kind of like what buehl showed in this thread HERE, but those five openings into my breakfast room area just make that area DIFFICULT to work with if I stick with the kitchen/breakfast room area. C X, my biggest concern about putting the DR in the breakfast room/kitchen is the traffic flow. The size of the current DR is so much better for the kitchen, but I don't know how the traffic flow is going to work. I have been playing around with the idea you suggested (modified), it has some potential to kind of separate the new kitchen area from the current breakfast room (and some of the kitchen) to make a room, just haven't figured it out yet....See Moreneed kitchen window coverings advice

Comments (6)I would say roller shades can be warm. The composition of our roller shades help maintain the warmth in your house; these can also protect you from sunlight and sun heat during the day. So, I would say you can add blackout shades for privacy and on top you can have light filtering shades. Blackout is more for privacy, whereas light filtering is for letting the sun enter.
