Casual eating place + storage? Is this for just one seat on each end? Or seating in the middle with cabinets on each end?

I'm trying to picture how you could get both casual eating and storage in a 24"D island b/c you need 15" for the seating overhang alone. BTW...with a 24" deep island, you need cabinets only 21" deep b/c you need to account for 1.5" overhang on each side - assuming no seating.

10'x10' is pretty small to put in an island - and definitely too small for an island with seating! Do you have cabinets (standard depth) and/or appliances on each side of the Kitchen? If so, that only leaves you with a maximum of 69" for the island + two aisles - which won't work! You need 42" aisles, which means you need 84" for the aisles alone!

That may be why you're not getting any responses...plus no one knows where you live, so how can they answer?

To figure out what you can really fit, keep in mind the following:

Standard base cabinets + counters along the perimeter are 25.5" deep (24" deep cabinet + 1.5" counter overhang)

Standard base cabinets + counters in an island or peninsula are 27" deep (24" deep cabinet + 1.5" counter overhang along the front + 1.5" counter overhang along the back)

Heights:

• Counter height counters are 36" off the finished floor (34.5" base high cabinets + approx 1.5" thick counters)
• Bar-height counters are 42" off the finished floor (40.5" base high cabinets or pony wall + approx 1.5" thick counters)
• Table-height counters are 30" off the finished floor - usually no base cabinets, just legs or similar for seating - similar to a table
• Note that counter stools are designed to meet one of the above standards

Island/Peninsula seating:

• Counter-height: minimum 15" of clear knee/leg overhang and 24" of linear space per seat
• Bar-height: minimum 12" of clear knee/leg overhang and 24" of linear space per seat
• Table-height: minimum 18" of clear knee/leg overhang and 24" to 30" of linear space per seat

Aisle widths

• Minimum aisle width for one-person kitchen: 42"
• Minimum aisle width for two or more people in the kitchen (prepping, cooking, and/or cleaning up): 48"
• Aisle width behind seats with no traffic or counters or cabinets or appliances behind the seats: 44"
• Aisle width behind seats if only minimal traffic and no counters or cabinets or appliances behind the seats: 48"
• Aisle width behind seats if normal traffic and/or counters or cabinets or appliances behind the seats: 60"

Appliances

• Depth measurement for aisle determination is from the handles or whatever sticks out into the aisle the farthest.

• Important: Always measure from counter edge-to-counter edge or to/from appliance handles, not cabinet-to-cabinet.

Now, to determine what you can reasonably fit in your kitchen:

• Add the items together for what you plan to have.
• Note that with a 10' deep kitchen, your best option for seating in the kitchen is a peninsula, not an island.

There is not enough space for an island. Have the cabinets been installed yet? Once they are in you will realize there is not enough space for an island.

I bought ours at a local unpainted furniture store. They custom made it to the size I wanted, with drawers where I wanted. I painted it myself and that saved a lot of money.

A floor plan and/or pics would be good so we can see exactly what you've got. We have an 11x11 kitchen and put in an island, but one side is open to the dining room so we have room. We also made the seating overhang on the island hinged so that it can drop down when not in use creating more space (but, so far, we keep it up almost always).

Agreed. You don't have room. If you would share a scale drawing of your space and cabinet layout, we might be able to help you come up with alternative solutions.

what kind of storage do you need? perhaps there is a corner just outside of your kitchen...in your dining zone, where you can place a vertical corner cabinet. I would spend some time using kitchen...figuring out how to handle various placements of food..dishes..pots in what you just had installed before moving on to more custom built things that occupy front and center locations like an island. Corners or empty walls in adjacent dinettes or dining rooms can be used. There are interesting and useful storage pieces in vintage and antique or flea markets.....sometimes at a fair price...depends on if you have the temperament to go look and accept older pieces with character, might not exactly match, but will lend ambience.....and can be moved around the spaces you may have,and not yet considered .
