Next Week's Artic Blast of Cold Weather
Comments (6)Dawn even the NWS had raised their predictions for next week a little this morning. Still 15 degrees or so colder than most others are saying. I think it will be cold. How cold and how long is the question and where there seems to be such a difference on opinions. I think a lot of it has to do with different computer models of what the jet stream will do. The NWS here has seemed to be on the extreme low side all winter so far. Sunday they were saying upper 30's and we hit 53. Our local forecaster is way more accurate and as of yesterday he wasn't going out on a limb too far but wasn't sure we would see the extreme cold the NWS is saying. Of course the NWS only goes out 7 days. Will be interesting what they say for next Wed when they update as that is when the others feel the temps will start moderating a little and warming up slightly. I don't put a lot of faith in anything over 24 hours out. But do put more with the majority opinion. Intellicast has had the most accurate this winter so far. Jay...See MoreSaw a robin today! Gonna be spring like a few days!
Comments (15)Like rhizo, I see robins every day. And not when I am lookin' in the mirror ;) There was one that would follow me around the yard when I was weeding and watering the garden. Then, the garden got a lot more carefree and he'd come out just because I was there. I see those every day along with sparrows, Carolina chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, and mockingbirds. I can tell its winter when I see a titmouse if that counts. added this: here is a link to all our birds, and have seen just about all of them. Not all of the water birds. I have seen a great blue heron and the other big white one, but not kingfisher types. :) Here is a link that might be useful: Birds of Tennessee This post was edited by rob333 on Thu, Dec 5, 13 at 7:57...See MoreWhat you gonna grow next year?
Comments (19)Some varieties tolerate cooler weather better than others, but none of them are at their best in it. And tomatoes need sun to develop full flavor, so for rainy climates, something that 1) resists fungal diseases better and 2) has an assertive flavor profile to begin with is probably a good choice. Seysonn is a good person to ask, as his climate right now can be cool and rainy during many years. However, it's worth pointing out that there's more to it than temps and rain, and a lot of people who live in similar climates report very different results with the same varieties. The only way to know for sure whether something will do well is to try it. There are some general guidelines, though. For the UK, I wouldn't recommend a very long-season tomato like Brandywine, for example. Research varieties you're thinking about at Tatiana's TomatoBase. You will be able to see how it grew for people in various locations. And remember that any DTM (days to maturity) estimates are not from seed but from transplant into the ground, which usually happens when plants are about 6 weeks old. They're also very variable depending on growing conditions, so look at them comparatively and don't depend on them to be accurate for YOU, i.e., if you have grown a variety already, then compare the seed seller's listed DTM for that variety with the variety you're thinking of growing just to get an idea of whether it will take longer or not and by approximately how much time. Note that people can get really different results even on comparative DTM, too, though. There are no guarantees in tomato growing....See MoreIt is gonna be c-o-l-d !
Comments (52)I can't imagine how settlers relying on wood stoves or fireplaces for heat survived in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakotas back in the 1800s. Plus they had to go out to care for their livestock! Now I am amazed that the entire populations of those states are not snowbirds. I remember wearing my wool lined, padded corduroy coat when it was in the 40s in San Diego and thinking it was so cold (I was right on the coast so it never approached freezing as it might a bit inland) -- even though I had grown up in Ohio and lived through the Blizzard of 1978 (and yes, managed to get from and back to work). I had acclimated to the warmer climate. Now I am acclimated to the cold again and still wear that coat for outdoor chores like shoveling snow, in much colder temps than San Diego ever had! About that blizzard -- I remember a group of us leaving work at 8 am while the wind was howling. One of my coworkers had her car parked on the street across from the entrance & went out to start the engine to let it warm up.. But, she was a small woman, and she couldn't get back to the building against the wind! One of the security guards had to go rescue her....See MoreUser
