What tree do I have that is pushing my fence down.

Not the best pics since it was getting late, but maybe someone will know.

It is a very branchy, twiggy, leafy tree. It grows pretty fast since we moved in 2 and half years (the whole tree pics were too dark and it grows on an empty lot, so I can't get a whole shot without the fence)

There is a hole in my fence so I was able to stick the phone through the hole to get some pics of the trunk.

It has a smell when you cut or crush the leaves, but I can't describe the smell, kind of like herbs and spices tree smell. LoL

Hubby said maybe it was a type of oak tree since there is an oak near by. I never thought of that bc well it is still a young tree although it is tall. I have only noticed baby oak trees when new houses are built and those trees have a perfect single long trunk before branches start, but maybe "wild" baby oaks have a less uniformed look.

Magnolia was my first thought too. Definitely not an oak.

Mine's netting. I got the 30" VersaNet fence with PRS-50 solar energizer. My garden's about 320' around, so I bought two lengths of 164' fencing. I got green posts and green netting, which looks nicer than black. The kit contains a 3-foot-long grounding stake and several green PowerPosts, which are more rugged than those built in-line into the netting. I'd recommend getting their new "Plus" version of the netting, which has the posts closer together (so the netting doesn't sag), or else an equivalent number of extra PowerPosts. I also got a digital voltmeter to check the fence charge. Setup is very easy: you just push the posts into the ground, clip the metal leads of the nets together, drive in the grounding stake, and attach the energizer to the fence and the stake. A cylindrical fence-post driver you can buy at a hardware store for about $20 works fine for banging in the grounding stake. The biggest hassle is having to keep the grass touching the fence fairly short (about 4" or less), because otherwise wet grass draws off charge from the fence and makes it less repellent to critters. Pulling up the fence and mowing every two weeks is enough. If you want a little more slack, you can get a more-powerful energizer; they also come in a version with a larger solar panel, good for year-round use. Some people use herbicides to remove the grass under the fence permanently, but that wasn't something I wanted near a vegetable garden. I chose the 30" version because there are also deer nearby and the occasional cow (escaped from neighboring farm). You could try the 20" model, which is also easier to step over. Of course a deer could easily jump over either, and a groundhog could tolerate being zapped without injury. The idea is that the animal approaches the net cautiously, gets shocked once or twice, and opts to seek out another salad bar. It's worked for two seasons, knock wood. Before I put it up I lost several beds of lettuce, broccoli, spinach, corn, etc. in raids by various creatures. Feel free to ask more questions. I'm happy and relieved it's worked. Thanks for clearing up the confusion! I just read that Peaches and Almonds are close relatives which is why I was confused. Looks like in a couple months I'll be feasting on some Almonds which I like more that Peaches. That's good, I thought whatever it was that was growing was going to be a total loss this year. Good news for you Lindsey- Hass don't have male trees, they are A types. You can cut down the unproductive tree with no impact on fruit production. Wikipedia says "the avocado is unusual in that the timing of the male and female flower phases differs among cultivars. There are two flowering types, "A" and "B". "A" cultivar flowers open as female on the morning of the first day and close in late morning or early afternoon. Then they open as male in the afternoon of the second day. "B" varieties open as female on the afternoon of the first day, close in late afternoon and reopen as male the following morning. "A" cultivars: Hass, Gwen, Lamb Hass, Pinkerton, Reed. "B" cultivars: Fuerte, Sharwil, Zutano, Bacon, Ettinger, Sir Prize, Walter Hole." I have two Hass trees and believe me, that's plenty! Congratulations on your new home. Hi all, Thanks for the kind wishes. The fence didn't really damage too many plants, but it did beat up one of my two yellow squash plants. I think it will recover. It also severed a heavily fruit laden branch of my garden huckleberry bush. That's a bit disappointing and I felt really sad cutting it off, but it would have died anyway. Everything else is, I think, okay. The repairman came out to fix the fence today and said, "Well, I can fix your fence, but I don't know if I can do it without hurting your garden. You got a nice garden back here." But, luckily, he managed to do it. So, after the ground dries out from the 1.93" we got yesterday, I'll be able to pick more up a bit more and see if things are really as good as I hope. I think you're right Diane! Oklahoma does bring out Mother Nature's inner drama queen! Kelly

Cherry laurel? It's a real pest for me - rapid, persistent grower w/ very tough wood & roots. We paid a lot to have a big tree removed that was right up against the house & it regrew many suckers & cracked a decorative concrete wall.

Leaves look different close up than in the shots of the tree - the leaves of the tree look like cherry laurel (Prunus caroliniana)

I was going to say a Camphor tree also, but it's hard to tell. If so, the leaves will have a strong smell when crushed. The "fragrance" is much like you describe above. One positive thing about this tree is that it serves as a host to the Spicebush butterfly. They lay their eggs on them. If it's a Camphor it is deciduous and produces black berries that the birds really like. I believe it is now labeled as a category one invasive in Florida. The Camphor Conundrum.

Funny two of the ideas have black berries, I don't recall seeing any, but I may not have been paying attention, so I will make sure to be on the look out.

Magnolia, I wish! But I don't think so, this tree has a more "weedy" look to it.

I have always wanted to sneaky on the other side of the fence and chop it down, but now that it is starting to grow more and is starting to take on a tree shape maybe I'll change my mind. It use to look like some sort of bush with many stalks for a while, now with the hole in the fence I can see he has a real trunk, but it has lots of branches and I think it is forked/split trunk and there could also be two trees right next to each other.

There is another tree just maybe 8 feet down the fence that also pushes on the fence but that one has zero leaves on it right now so what ever that one is it not the same as this ever green one.

I also have a big prickly paddle cactus that has grown into/onto the fence and is trying to pull it down, but she is on my side of the fence.

Those damn trees are seriously ganging up on that fence something fierce!

Looks a lot like the tree we called sassafras as children. If you can get a piece of root and it smells like root beer, then I am right.
