Is Anybody Using Quartz For Tub Surround Etc.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has used quartz for their tub surround and possibly other parts of the bathroom like behind the toilet and for sink back splash. We are thinking of doing that rather than tiling. But I would prefer 1 cm (I think its really 13mm) thickness to 2 cm. There are not many choices of 1 cm colours. Some brands of quartz don't even provide any.

Does anyone have 1 or 2 cm solid surface quartz on the bathroom walls? Is 2cm too thick? It seems like it would stick out too far on the wall and be very thick to sit on the bath tub.

2cm is not "too thick"; just get your details right.

Joseph, not sure what you mean by "get you details right". Do you mean when it is being templated, or in tight corners??

Hi, turns out my tub spout does not reach over the tub rim and instead of installing it in the tile surround I will have to drill in the tub rim. I know there is the risk of chipping etc. and it has to be done carefully. Has anybody done it? What bits did you use (1st carbide, then metal bit??)? I'd appreciate any advice from an expert. Thanks you

I don't know about vintage/antique stuff, but we upgraded our 12-year old master bath and sold all the old fixtures. Here's what we charged (and got) in case it provides some frame of reference. 72" whirlpool tub $150 Fiberglass tub/shower surround $50 36" vanity $50 8' cultured marble vanity top with faucets $50 toilet $25 light bars $5 each 8' plain wall mirror $25 All the fixtures were gray, and the vanities were whitewashed oak. Everything was in decent condition, just real contractor-grade, and we wanted a luxury spa. I was actually amazed that people wanted the stuff, but there are apparently enough people out there that can't afford much. If you can't find any buyers, at the very least offer it on your local freecycle so it doesn't go into the landfill. We got rid of our carpet that way, again amazed at how many people wanted it.

Some stones are more "bulletproof" than others (I don't know where Costa Esmeralda falls on the spectrum). Seal it well, and try to avoid leaving acid based beauty and cleaning products on the surface (even seemingly product-free containers can leave rings--the coffee cup/ring syndrome). I make sure to avoid placing the tb cleaner bottle on our travertine floor tiles, and wipe up any drips or splatters quickly. An ounce of prevention and all that. Not all all stones are equally sensitive to etching or staining, so test a sample piece and see if the level of indestructibility works for you and your lifestyle. Some people are fine with a little babying, others want totally bombproof materials To me, the beauty of natural stone is worth the minor extra precautions I take.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for fabrication and installation. For example, the quartz shouldn't sit directly on the tub, it should have a gap to be filled with silicone to prevent capillary action. These seemingly small details can make or break an installation over time.

What can I use to support the weight of the quartz and prevent damage to the bathtub, when using it as a surround?

We have had the thinner 1 cm quartz for a few years now as tub surround and behind the toilet. I am glad we chose it as it is totally problem free. It's true, unless things have changed, there are less choices and it actually cost more than the thick stuff. I wouldn't recommend the regular thickness. Way too heavy and it juts out too far. The thin is more like a tile would be as far as sticking out. I forget but I think the installers used very thin pieces of heavy rubber (like for windows) or something to set the quartz on the tub. The weight is supported well as it is glued on so the wall is supporting much of the weight. I did complete waterproofing on the wall first also. I think you need a skilled installer and a very skilled person to do the templating. Don't forget to add a grab bar or two. This was done for us but the support has to be installed in the studs before drywall and quartz go on. The quartz guys cut the holes for it and the shower and tap controls. It is a lot of precision work. We also had two niches on one wall which they lined with the quartz and the bottom ledge of the niches were made with the granite we used for our counter. There were several nice marble look ones when we were doing this and they make nice tub surrounds.
