Solar Pest Repellers
Comments (2)According to the advertising hype about these pest repelers they emit an ultrasonic sound that you cannot hear that either drives the target pest away or kills them. There is no real good evidence they work and my experience is they do not work. The same thing applies to those windmills or solar powered mole/gopher repelers that are supposed to emit a low, or sometimes high, frequency sound that repels those buggers, there is no evidence that they really work....See MoreDo any plants or repellants work for snakes?
Comments (32)I'm no fool, I don't like the poisonous ones. But other than that I'm not afraid of snakes. But I do understand phobias since I have one with cockroaches (go figure that I stay here in Florida!) Anyway, last week while in the veggie patch, I noticed the dog growling and jumping at something. Sure enough, it was a HUGE striped rat snake. I made her stop since it's harmless and I don't want her messing with snakes since we have killed rattle snakes here. Later on that afternoon I go to the chicken coop to gather eggs, I opened up the hatch to the nesting boxes and this snake is inside one of them, trying to swallow a golf ball, with a real egg laying right beside it. So I grab a stick and try to sweep it out of the coop, the stick is brittle and keeps breaking off. I finally get it out of the coop on the ground, still the golf ball is in it's mouth. So I go to look for the pitchfork only to pick it up and move it off the property - when I get back it is gone - the golf ball lying there where it finally managed to spit it out. So I'm searching for it, can't believe it disappeared so fast. Then I looked up in a close-by tree and there it is, out on a limb, sticking it's tongue out at me. So I gave up for about and hour and went back to check the coop - it's back in there AGAIN trying to swallow another golf ball. I chased it back and forth all over that chicken coop but it got away through the chicken wire and into another tree. The next time I will get a pair of gloves on and snatch that sucker up and dispense with him to the neighbor's property....See MoreDo deer chasers really work?
Comments (12)Our pond is not very large, about 4' long by 2' wide, kidney shaped. It has lots of aquatic plants in it. We had 4-5 goldfish, and the hawks ate all but one within a short period. The final fish disappeared a few months later. Recently my wife has seen a heron in our back yard, apparently checking out the pond, although we haven't restocked it with fish yet. We are waiting for the pond to warm up, and need to install a new pump, before adding more fish again. BTW, we live near a fairly large nature park on the outskirts of the city. Lots of deer from the park roam through our neighborhood at night, eating all of the gardens and other plants. We also have a lot of hawks, herons, geese and other animals that spill over from the park. We know it was hawks that ate the fish because: (1) I saw one roosting on our arbor near the pond several times the week the week the fish disappeared; and (2) our nextdoor neighbor actually saw a hawk swoop down into our pond, grab something in its talons, and fly off....See MoreDo those mosquito killer things really work?
Comments (23)Check out mosquitomagnet.com/how_it_works/ They recommend changing propane tanks every three weeks, somewhat expensive but very little mosquito activity at my house makes it worth the $16 refill charge. The unit burns propane and releases carbon dioxide which attracts the female mosquitos and traps them in the unit. I also use a added attractant - but it it not recommended for the asian tigers. I don't know how effective the mosquito magnet is on asian tigers. It only attracts biting insects though, butterflies and bees are safe....See More- 8 years ago
