I liked that somebody posted the pic, just wondered about their motivation. Thanks for explaining it as a public service--a good thing. Maybe it was FirndAGrave, I don't know but I do remember I was cruising thru A, at the time.

So far I've uploaded almost 3,500 photos to FindAGrave, and this is small potatoes compared to what some contributors have done. Some seem to be going for quantity instead of quality, though, and it's a shame to see so many blurry, unreadable images.

I've seen discussions by other FAG volunteers, and was surprised at how proprietary some are about their photographs. They don't want anyone, not even the deceased's family, to copy their photos. Hey, they're not art! I think it's nice when people take the time to ask to copy my gravestone pics, but I always say yes. (My personal photographs are a different story.)

I wonder where you were. Not at ancestry, that's for sure. I suspect you were at findagrave on the specific cemetery page and you clicked "view all interments".

The only way to share photos at ancestry is if you put them on your tree or if you give them to someone who has a tree there and they put them on. As far as finding things that "belong" to your family. You will find it. Why do you think we paid the money for access? ancestry and the LDS church and plenty of other web sites/businesses scan thousands of books and ledgers to put on their web sites. Other people index them and when you do a search for a specific name, that's how the name is found. I know I would never in a million years have been able to travel to all the places my ancestors lived and found the books with their birth, baptism, marriage, death, taxes, land ownership, and on and on. Can you imagine the time and expense!

If you have cemetery monument photos that you want to post, by all means sign up at findagrave. It's free. You will have to create the person's page unless someone has already done it. Then upload your pictures. If you are willing to take photos for others who can't get to your area, there's a place to tick to say you will do that. You and everyone within a certain distance of that cemetery will get an email that there's been a request for a photo for Susie Smith at Podunk cemetery. If you want to do it, claim it. If you don't, delete the email.

I was doing research for my Mom and subscribed to A.com for a month or so. Didn't find what I specifically wanted to know so terminated sub. I didn't even know about Findagrave until this thread. Anyhoo, I did cruise around extensively so I could have landed on findagrave and not paid attention. I found gravesite pics, and it was cool.

If you want to do it, claim it. If you don't, delete the email.

Or you could do what I do, which is nothing. :-)

I hang on to the email until it's a good time to visit that particular cemetery. This is never in winter. When the time comes, I check all the photo requests listed for the cemetery at FindAGrave, but I still don't claim any of them. If I find a requested gravestone, I claim the request when I get home. This has always worked for me, possibly because FAG volunteers are few and far between around here.

The "look" and layout of Ancestry.com changed very recently, and if you click on "Gallery" on a person's information page you will see small snapshots of the documents that are attached as sources. For example, if someone is searching and finds a World War I or World War II draft card and attaches the source, a small image of the draft card will appear on the Gallery page. So, it's possible that someone attached a link to the Find A Grave memorial page and that's why the image of the headstone appears. Other times it's because someone will take the Find A Grave photo and attach the photo itself to the Ancestry page as a Gallery upload.

I have large family collections at Ancestry and Have claimed or asked to have Find a Graves transferred to me...Most people are very accommodating. I have a copy that shows the names of the people buried at the state hospital and intended to take pictures of a couple of graves for people who requested but haven't as yet because of the cancer.
