What to do, what to do.... X post from Kitchens
Comments (9)Thanks for the responses. No, i never did replace the other pendants. I am still working on those but now wondering if I should just do recessed lighting instead of having pendants at all. I do love those other lights I found and maybe I can convince DH to change those, after all, he keeps complimenting the painting every time he walks by it. (he was a little disgruntled spending so much money on it in the first place), but I think he also LOVES It.. Come to think of it, I am not sure the other lights will look as good with our backsplash (we added it towards the end of the summer)....See MoreWhere do you put dirty kitchen linens in small kitchen?
Comments (11)A few good ideas, and my little wicker basket was great. I'm in a bi-level, no doors to anything hidden, just the DR, LR and stairs down to entry door, or hallway to bedrooms. It's all open, no doorknobs even! No pantry either. We USED to drop them down over the stair rail where they landed on the 1st floor in front of the entry door from the garage! Not cool. Right now I have the basket in the DR, but don't want that to be my permanent solution. . . Under sink is low because of farm sink, but it's full! Recycling bin, DW soap, other clean up stuff. Maybe if I can find a cute basket with a lid that's small enough, I can keep it in the dining room. We used to have an old family wooden picnic basket, but I think after 60+ years it finally just fell apart....See MoreWhat do I do with this kitchen!?
Comments (12)Is it feasible to "mirror" the kitchen? If your kitchen ran along the right wall of the room, you wouldn't have traffic walk right behind the cook. You would get a little more length for that wall, and you could wrap around the bottom wall for L-shape, but longer than you can do on the current wall. Remove the door between the lounge and kitchen, as Patricia Colwell suggested. With a dining table on that side of the room, you don't need a door there to block the sigh of kitchen messes. I would still want an island behind the main wall. Depending on total dimensions, it could be a peninsula like what you have, or a small moveable island cart. As others said, a drawing with dimensions would be very helpful. Some of us are even willing to convert ourselves from centimeters. Would also be helpful to know standard oven and fridge widths where you live....See MoreWhat would you do to change this kitchen?
Comments (32)Congratulations on the new home—what an exciting chapter ahead! You're absolutely right: the bones of this kitchen are excellent, and with a few smart updates, you can completely transform the space into something brighter, more modern, and tailored to your taste. Cabinet Color & Style You're not alone in feeling that the dark wood, while high quality, can make the space feel heavier than it needs to. Painting the cabinets a soft, warm white can instantly open things up. If you're not a fan of the ornate detail, swapping just the doors for something with a cleaner profile (like a Shaker or slab style) can make a huge difference without ripping out perfectly good cabinetry. Tiered Countertop Removing the raised portion of the island is a very common update, and typically not as complicated or costly as people fear—especially if the cabinetry underneath is staying put. It may involve replacing the stone and doing a bit of electrical rerouting if there are outlets, but the payoff in both looks and functionality is huge. A single-level island not only looks more current, it also increases usable prep and gathering space. Coordination with the Family Room It’s helpful—but not mandatory—to coordinate finishes with the adjacent family room. We actually remodeled our kitchen to off white cabinetry for most of the areas and the island and a peninsula in a darker wood. The family room is adjacent, and the wood tones are different but work well together. The family room, in the background, is a different wood tone, as is the dining table. The photo below shows more contrast than when in the room. Other Ideas to Brighten the Space Update the backsplash with a simple, light tile—zellige or handmade-look subway tiles are popular and timeless. Consider replacing light fixtures with something airy and sculptural that makes more of a statement. If you can swing it, replacing the countertops with something lighter (like quartz or a pale honed stone) can dramatically lift the whole space. The good news is—you’re starting with solid cabinetry and a great layout. These changes, while impactful, don’t have to be overwhelming or wildly expensive. I’ve helped many clients make similar transformations, and the results are always worth it. Keep us posted—would love to see progress photos as things move along!...See More- 10 years ago
