A few months ago in the kitchens forum I posted about a painting I had been longing for. It was a bit more than I would ever spend on artwork ( I tend to be frugal in that department) but something about this painting would not let me forget about it. We happen to "find" some money- we overpaid our car payment for 2 months (direct debit out of our account) and so the money had already been withdrawn- in my eyes it was already spent. I was bugging and bugging my DH about this painting and he finally gave in and said fine happy everything go get it. I did and it arrived on Monday. The reason I fell in love with this painting was b/c it was perfect for over our dry bar in my kitchen. When it came on MOnday, my love grew even stronger. I LOVE IT...

BUT,,,,,,

I just hung it up and now I realized it/the wall and the dry bar are not centered around the light fixture. The dry bar was an after thought after our kitchen was already done. The light fixture is an IKEA temporary fix as I could not figure out what fixture I wanted, and eventually I will be getting a 48/60" round table once the kiddos decide not to write on the table or use a knife on clay and accidentally ding the table. It doesn't look awful unless you are stading at the angle this picture was taken from (there is a slider behind me as I shoot the photo) but from the FR or far end of the kitchen it obviously is not a big deal..

I centered the painting on the dry bar not the wall as we you can see the light switch and thermostat. On the lower to the right of the dry bar there is a vacuum outlet and regular outlet to the right of the cabinet when facing it so the bar is not completely centered either..

So what do i do? I;m not sure why i am asking b/c the painting is not going anywhere. I specifically bought it for that location. Eventually we will get a new fixture (maybe sooner now that it is making me crazy).

Do you think it looks that bad? I don't think I will do anything with it or the light- I am not a big fan of swaggering fixtures so I suppose I just need to live with it.

Doesn't bother me at all. I imagine from most places in the room, you would never notice it?

It is exactly as I would place it. I think it looks great. btw, did you ever change those pendants over the island? I remember you found a couple you liked.

That is really high! Is this built in going across your entire wall in the great room? Our neighbors in our new development did the exact same thing only it was 18 ft. and they only paid about 10k.. Does your builder have a finish crew? We just built and our builders finish crew (the ones who did all the base board, molding, etc) also do built-ins. I'm sure your builder knows lots of others that will do a great job for half the price!

I would wait on the window treatments until the tile and flooring are in place. The backsplash will have a lot of visual impact, and that will definitely have an effect on what you choose. Plus, right now I see dark cabinets and a lot of dark in the tile - not sure how dark the counters and floor will be. If they are also dark, you might want to keep the windows more open to let in natural light. Looks great so far!

circuspeanut, That makes total sense. And I totally agree that it's a better layout. But---- we're really having renovation burnout now. As you know we started demoing the main living area a year ago.. and we're still installing trim and living with doorless cabinets and plywood counters in the pantry. And that's spending every second of spare time on it! So, I'm trying to find a good compromise between making this cruddy bathroom work and look better, and not making huge amounts of extra work for DH. He's the plumber and electrician. He's already groaning about moving the door.... but I do think that will be a pretty dramatic improvement over the floor plan we have now. We've decided to do a new tub/shower combo, and he was relieved that that meant he didn't need to break into the 1950's drains to move the toilet. :)

Dark stones are tricky that way. Polished, they can show everything and honed they can look great or look chaulky and still show everything. Sounds like you will like the look with the enhanced sealer. Hope so. Let us know.

Thanks for the responses. No, i never did replace the other pendants. I am still working on those but now wondering if I should just do recessed lighting instead of having pendants at all. I do love those other lights I found and maybe I can convince DH to change those, after all, he keeps complimenting the painting every time he walks by it. (he was a little disgruntled spending so much money on it in the first place), but I think he also LOVES It.. Come to think of it, I am not sure the other lights will look as good with our backsplash (we added it towards the end of the summer).

I would not stress over it. Like you said, it is probably only obvious when you are standing in the exact spot where you took the picture. Nice picture and it works where you have it!

I notice your dry bar is not centered on that wall. I think that would bother me. I would move that and centre the picture above it. To me the light fixture and the picture dont have to line up. Love the picture.

Definitely not a big deal. I might place a big fat vase on the thermostat end with a seasonal flower/greenery arrangement to obscure the electricals but that is certainly not necessary. Pine boughs and berries would be pretty for the winter.

I love your light and your new painting and think it all looks great like it is now!

I tend to stress over "little" things and when I ask everyone who comes to my house, I am always reassured that only "I" would think of these issues and they never even notice, nevermind think of this stuff!

Now open a bottle of wine with your DH and sit at your dining room table admiring your new art! (Or wait til at least noon time!)

Looks wonderful -- you COULD simply add a lamp on the right-hand side -- which would visually balance the whole area. Then add a cool flat-bottomed basket on the top to hold bar goodies and bottles.

What teacats said. Make sure you get a lamp that carries the same feeling as your chandy. It's all about balance. Cool painting and lovely home!
