need help making my sorry house look better despite my limitation
Comments (6)Here is a picture I pulled up off google maps as well. with a question regarding the wood fence in the right corner. Is there a point to these fences? It was here so we haven't touched it as i am not sure it's purpose. We have since planted daylilies in that area. what do you think of a rose hedge across the back from post to post. this area gets full sun, the soil is sand, the grass hardly grows but the daylilies have taken to it fine and i do have shrub roses that i need a spot for. They're red, and just small and were originally purchased to go along the side where the weed problem is, but then i realized if i needed to take them 30 inches from the wall it interferes with traffic in and out of the gate to the back. any and all suggestions are welcome. to note, the front garden lining the patio pavers gets full sun mostly, closest to the house there is an area that gets shade and is getting hostas. the garden infront of the house along where teh windows are gets mostly shade until that corner, and i wanted to put potted hostas in there, and possibly line coleus in, or caladiums. wasn't sure how tall caladiums get. I have also considered an urn in place of the small square planter on the walkway....See MoreCan I make my dryer's vent line better looking?
Comments (3)If you have a 6" inside-dimension clearance between the exterior wall and your sheetrock, you have more options than most: 1. Use 4" round rigid-steel ducting. 2. Use flat rigid-steel ducting (more difficult to find). 3. Use flat rigid-steel "periscope" ducting. 4. Use a dryer duct exit panel. Whichever you choose, don't bury flexible ducting in the wall--you need to use rigid-steel ducting for in-wall installations. Here's links to all except the flat rigid-steel ducting: Standard 4" round rigid ducting: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Speedi-Products-4-in-x-60-in-Aluminum-Rigid-Pipe-26-Gauge-EX-26AP-460/202907098#.Ubp0aee1FQg "Periscope" ducting: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Whirlpool-29-77-in-In-the-Wall-Dryer-Vent-Periscope-4392892/202647858#.Ubp0F-e1FQg "DryerBox" exit panel: http://www.dryerbox.com/index-confirmed.htm...See MoreHow do I make my wine cellar look better?
Comments (47)edenchild, I bet you could find fancy stuff online or in an upscale sort of store if you wanted to... but just the basic stuff a local fabric store would have would work just fine. Most fabric stores sell felt by the yard in basic primary colors, some pastels, and sometimes some prints. Get it by the yard, it comes in different widths, but common around 36 or 44 inches, sometimes wider- then you can cut it to whatever size you need it and you don't need seams or anything to finish the edges. Don't get squares or sheets of the stuff, you got too much racks to play with that. If you want, you could pick something bright to add a wee pop of color to the shelf fronts while still being functional. Red would be traditional, but light or bright colors would be nice too. Cut the felt to be barely inside the depth of the shelves, draping over the front edge is a PITA and usually looks like tacky crap. But do be sure to leave yourself with a few inches of drape on both ends over on the width of the shelves, gives you shift room for bottle movement as they get added or removed from the shelf. To do this... and use a fabric tape that's soft and not a hard ruler or metal measuring tape... measure the depth of your shelf just inside the braces, and that's final. Then lay the tape across the width of your shelf, using a bottle in each slot to make sure the "dip curve" is accounted for, and use that for your width measurement. Also... you might not be one for chardonnay since it's a white, but since you like reds... watch your cabs and pinot bottles. Some of them have a slight taper with the bottle and it's better to store them punt facing out instead of the wall if you stack your bottles on top of each other. Again, vibrations can cause a slide, and better to slide into the wall instead of onto the floor....See MoreBlah.. Stairwell need advice to make it better
Comments (3)I'm facing the same issue in an older house that we just bought. Some ideas might be to add some trim (crown mold, wainscot) or maybe some artwork on that tall narrow wall....See Morepractigal
