I used Richards link and did as it said and got to the end and it said I need to have XP, which I do. Now what?? It said it was installed and it is not. Need XP...

I'm not going to follow the link because I already have Ccleaner. Piriform usually uses Filehippo, does that sound familiar? If so, are you reasonably sure you used the right download link? I ask because whenever Ccleaner updates to a new version, their internal servers outsource downloads to Filehippo, and I find Filehippo to be confusing and way overloaded with PUP's (Potentially Unwanted Programs.)

I always get Ccleaner on new installs from Cnet's Download.com.

So, now you aren't sure what you have. If you followed through on the install, it should have installed an icon to your desktop. You said you have XP. I would first go to Start>Programs. Look for Ccleaner. If you don't see it, and assuming you downloaded the correct program, then it's possible you didn't actually install it.

Go to Start>Set Program Access and Defaults>Change or Remove Programs. When the list populates, look for Ccleaner. If you have it, then post again. If you don't you'll need to find your 'Downloads' folder. That is where most browsers will have stored the installation file. Ccleaner is titled... ccsetupxxx. You'll probably find your 'Downloads' folder in 'Documents and settings' or 'My Documents'.

If you didn't actually download the Ccleaner install file, and instead were saddled with one of Filehippo's ads, then that's a horse of a different color.

Just had a thought... Does the fact that this computer has XP Pro on it make any diff in whether I can d/l the free version or not? It shows in control panel and in a/r. 9.31Ms. I restarted, no diff. Small box still says I need XP.??

Just looked in my d/l file and it is not there. What would a filehippo ad look like?. Dont recall seeing that.

Nope... XP pro is an Operating System, nothing strictly to do with commercial use, and Ccleaner works on any OS platform going back at least until XP.

FileHippo is simply the site which Piriform (the maker of Ccleaner) uses for their downloads. Their ads sometimes say something like 'download' with a different green button very similar-looking to the one you should click to get the proper file.

Honestly, here's what I would do... go to the Ccleaner Dowload here... http://download.cnet.com/ccleaner/

Then click... 'Download Now' directly under the Ccleaner banner, and next to the 'Download Editors' Rating' stars. You'll be redirected to another page with instructions for downloading or running the file. The download should be automatic. Depending on your browser, you'll get a 'popup' somewhere. Usually it will say 'save file', 'run', or 'run now'. Run it if you have the option. If it says save, watch at the top (maybe the bottom if it's a new IE version) and you'll see an icon that should signal the download in progress. Click it and run the file.

It should be fairly easy. After it loads, run the cleaner. Then, go to Cnet's Download.com and search for Malwarebytes. Do the same thing. Run that.

I would still get and run Malwarebytes. That popup you mentioned saying you needed XP is very suspicious.
