There is a new update for this; is it recommended?

CCleaner is regularly recommended. v2.27.1070 has been out since December 23rd and I haven't read of any concerns.

Since it is used at default settings and does not require preferences I recommend a removal of the prior version before installing. It only takes a minute and there is no reboot required.

Spwareblaster would be fine to install and a good idea. Along with a program called Web of trust (Wot) These programs actually can prevent Malware from installing in the first place. Only run 1 Anti Virus Program. Only use 1 Firewall. And only 1 Active Spyware program, like Windows Denfender, in your case Kaspersky probably covers you as it would more then likely have spyware protection and a firewall included. Spywareblaster does not scan in the background so it will never interfere with any other active spyware programs running. You will need to up-date it manually, I check mine once a week. Malwarebytes free will also never interfere with other active scanners, it's called an on-Demand scanner and does not run in the background and does not prevent malware, it is generally used after the fact to remove malware. Malwarebytes is the first tool of choice to use when you think you may have an infection or just addware like myweb search, or the ask toolbar.

Owbist, I have always used it like you do, but all of a sudden it cleans the settings/memory or whatever from MSSE and it says I am not protected. I researched and read that I should uncheck MS Antimalware in windows section of CC which fixed the problem. I was also told if that did not fix it to uncheck the MS Management Console. Later an another upgrade for CC the colors of my visited and unvisited thread were lost. I contacted CCleaner and was told to uncheck everything related to FF. Then this last upgrade the thing I had un checked came in checked again. I knew this time how to fix it. My main reason for starting this thread is because I remember someone saying they used another software to clean with.

OK, I understand and it makes sense. Sometimes, on these forums its easy to forget that its not just forum members and GW that can read posts. I'll try the other ways suggested. Thanks for all your time and the explanations. I've done some googling and I'm not seeing what would be expected from Zlob. No popups, nor sites that pop up telling me I've been infected and click here to remove. and I haven't been to any porn sites, unless you'd call searching for California King bedding on legitimate sites porn. What I am seeing is cursor not responding properly, and sometimes getting a strange mssg. on AVG antispy saying "connect to server" when I'm already connected and trying to run a search. Still under warranty but Best Buy Geek said it would take 7-10 days to diagnose. Yikes! Think I'll buy a new mouse in hopes that will help. I'm a Bills fan, so used to hoping for miracles. Can't install downloaded programs

Well - it took a little back and forth with the file extension fixes. If anyone else is following this thread, the link Mikie posted is great, as are Zep's instructions. I found that I also needed to read the instructions more carefully. At first I downloaded the larger "open it" program. Then I saw to just download the fix for the .exe program. Once that was extracted, I actually had to right click and select merge. The first time, it allowed me to install firefox and ccleaner, but not the newer java. I went through the sequence again. Eventually got everything updated, downloaded and installed. Damcoy: - while I was struggling before the .exe fix, right clicking on the downloaded file did not bring up the option to run as administrator. So I guess that didn't stick. Thanks everyone. Lynn.

I, OTOH, make sure that CC doesn't delete my more important cookies. Under Options > Cookies I have cookies for my frequently visited sites (forums, email services, etc.) saved so they don't get washed away with the junk cookies. For this reason I just do an upgrade.

An uninstall/re-install would erase all saved cookies, right ?

No they are not even touched during the re-installation process. However if CCleaner is not configured to ignore the target cookies they will be lost the first time CC is run.

I'm not a fan of protecting cookies. They corrupt and they expire. They are just little bits of data that can easily be replaced. On my systems, and I encourage others to do complete maintenance; clean is clean.
